A REGENCY MAHOGANY BERGERE LIBRARY ARMCHAIRATTRIBUTED TO GILLOWS, CIRCA 1815Of unusual design incorporating lion paw arm terminals95cm high, 64cm wide, 73cm deep overallProvenance: Private Collection, New York. Condition Report: Marks, scratches and abrasions comensurate with age and useSome old chips and splits. some minor old repairs. The chair is of solid useable structure. An unusual and attractive model of its type with design (with its adoption of finely carved lion paw terminals and roundels to the arm terminals being relatable to the designs of Thomas Hope or George Smith and contemporaries demonstrating the style. Good original surface and patina overall with some natural fading in some areas. The caned panels all in good condition with no obvious faults or holes/ breaks. The caning is later replaced but does not immediately look so. Additional old abrasions and scratches to the outer edges of the frame. Old worm holes to the seat rail, this does not affect the structure of the affected areas and is visible in relatively small numbers to the exterior sides of the seat rail. (see additional images) To the inside edge of the front seat rail (not visible from above the chair) there is a later applied and screwed in oak stretcher. There are no breaks to the immediately adjacent original seat rail. No old breaks or splicing to legs or any other parts of the main structure of the frame. There is a very neatly executed later dowel/ peg joint to each side of the upper part of each leg where it meets the corresponding seat rail. (see additional images) The leather of the cushion has age. It may possibly be original to the chair or could possibly be later 19th or early 20th century, There is fading, discoloration and surface cracking as expected for age and use. The cushion has been highly sympathetically been restored/ conserved with a later panel of black material to the underside. The brass mount to the upper part of one arm of one armchair is damaged and heavily indented (see images) The covering of the seats of the armchairs varies. The blue covered seat is extremely worn in the central area. The other two armchairs have various stains throughout and require replacement/ re-covered. The cover of the seat of the settee is relatively tidy overall but with some surface stains. The central bar stretcher is lacking from one armchair. A SET OF TWELVE REGENCY MAHOGANY DINING CHAIRSIN THE MANNER OF GILLOWS, CIRCA 1820To include two armchairseach 88cm high, 50cm wide, 47cm deep overallCondition Report: Marks, scratches and abrasions old chips and splits comensurate with age and use. Some old chips and splits. Some old repairs. Please refer to the additional images for reference to examples of condition/ repairs. Additional old marks and abrasions to the outer edges of legs as expected for age and use. Some very minor fading and wear to upholstery but has been relatively recently replaced (estimate within last 5 years) . The upholstery of one armchair bears some scratched marks across it. Some fading to the colour of some of the chairs. No splicing or breaks to legs detected. All of the chairs have later screwed in corner brackets to the interior corners of the seat rails/ joints. Some evidence of old worm, this is almost exclusively confined to the seat rails underlying he upholstery. This is mainly only visible to the underlying seats rails and to a relatively minor extent and does not weaken the structure of any elements. The chairs have a good original colour and surface, colour and patina overall, although the front legs of several of the chairs show evidence of having been cleaned and repolished/ re varnished. One chair has the front seat rail replaced. one other chair has two of the seat rails later replaced and another has the rear seat rail replaced. A PAIR OF CARVED GILTWOOD AND UPHOLSTERED BERGERE ARMCHAIRSIN LOUIS XV STYLE, LATE 19TH CENTURYeach 91cm high, 71cm wide, 55cm deep overallCondition Report: This pair of chairs has marks, scratches, knocks and abrasions consistent with age and use.The giltwood frames with some rubbing, chipping and flaking revealing variously the underlying terracotta, white gesso and beech layers, some later gilt paint. The construction joints are visible. The backs of the chairs have different fabric upholstery. The seats, back, sides, arms and cushions upholstered in a pink and white fabric woven with the pattern of watermarked fabric. The seat rails to one chair in particular have holes from previous upholstery tacks and some cracks. The upholstery clean and intact, with the appearance of being recently done. One of the chairs is lacking one section of trim to the back. We are unable to comment on the condition of the frame under the fixed upholstery. A GEORGE II WALNUT OPEN ARMCHAIR CIRCA 1735 103cm high, 71cm wide, 74cm deep overall Provenance: Private Collection, LondonFor a related chair of the period incorporating similar out swept open arms, see Christie's, London, 500 Years Decorative Arts Europe, 23rd September 2010, Lot 83 (£10,000). Condition Report: Marks, knocks, scratches and abrasions commensurate with age and use. Timber elements with the expected old minor splits and chips. Some small losses. Some old repairs. Some fading and additional to the timber of the arms. Needlework with various old stitched repairs overall. Needlework appears to have previously been professionally cleaned. Elements of the needlework appear possibly to be 18th century but may be of a later date. It appears that very little or possibly none of the 18th century needlework remains. The needlework panels have possibly been re-applied to the chair, or is later associated. Significant elements of the needlework have been replaced or re-woven at a later date. There are some noticeabel holes and losses to the needlework (see images) and various areas of the woven elements lacking/ lost. There is later fabric to the reverse of the back and the brass studding is later. Dreweatts cannot guarantee the originality of elements beneath upholstery. Slight movement within the arms but the chair is structurally solid overall. Evidence of old worm to seat rails which appear to be original. There are later screwed in and glued corner blocks to the seats rails. There are later screws securing the 'ear' brackets at the tops of the legs. Some old worm holes to other areas of the timber. (see additional images) One rear leg has a spliced section of replacement (approximately half of the leg) . The other rear leg is very likely a later replacement.To one arm there is a later dowel/ peg joint visible from the top of the arm and securing its joint with the shaped vertical arm support. Throughout the tops of the arms and the and the sides of the arm supports there are old filled holes. The holes were likely as a result with securing fabric there previously. To the lower terminal of one arm support there are two later dowel/ peg joints securing the element to the seat rail. This has been coloured with a dark varnish/ stain. Various old chips and splits throughout. There is evidence of old worm to both stools.The round stool with later feet, two old metal braces to cracks on the seat rail. The underside of the rails with old tack holes and nails. The wool work upholstery with later stitching and repairs. There is some movement to the joints.The square stool with worn moquette type upholstery; a chip to one of the legs. It appears that the stool has lost its feet or the legs have been shortened at some point. The supporting chamfered blocks to the backs of the seat rails are either original or 18th century replacements. The back of one front leg with two later screws to help secure join. One front leg with glued old repairs to 'ears'. The is an old dowel or plugged hole to the back rail above one leg. Chair is structurally solid overall. Section of old replacement timber inset into one front foot - this is very well disguised and only noticeable upon close inspection. Old tack holes to the undersides of rails. Chair has been re-upholstered and the needlework is later associated. Needlework with wear, losses and some small holes (see images). Some small stitched repairs to needlework. Dreweatts cannot guarantee the originality of elements beneath upholstery. It is possible that the two rear legs are old very well matched replacements. Lot 90

A PAIR OF WHYTOCK AND REID STYLE SETTEES the shaped frames with carved foliage and on scroll legs, 87cm high, 233cm wide and 74cm deep Condition Report: The upholstery on both settees is in reasonably fresh condition, though marked in places, particularly the seat. Nowhere are they frayed or torn. At the rear of one settee, the gimp, which appears to have been attached with an adhesive, has come loose. Show-wood is generally worn, with knocks and scratches consistent throughout. On one sofa's end there is a crack in the wood, which would appear to have occurred some considerable time ago. Joints at legs are a touch loose in places, though this results in no perceptible wobble when in use. Overall, these are extremely robust. One end piece of carved facing has lifted from the frame beneath, though it holds firm. Arms are solid with very little play in them.
