****** ITEM LOCATION BISHTON HALL**********A George II country oak cased longcase clock, Woolley of Codnor (Derbyshire), circa 1750, original Woolley-design hands; decorative fettling flourishes to the steelwork; finely-ringed pillars; scribing to the 12” dial plate, flat-backed, small brass-faced pendulum bob; arched cut-out plates to the base of the movement and oval cut out to the seat board. The clock bears a label stating that the clock was restored and sold, in 1963, by T & S Hyde; who were antique clock specialists based in Stamford. Height 194cmNotes: James Woolley was a wealthy gentleman farmer/clockmaker, who was thought to have been born around 1700, and made clocks from around 1718 until the mid-1780s. Many articles have been written about his clocks; noting the quality of his engraved dials and clock movements, and of his eventual fame as a clockmaker. Various accounts state that he first trained as a blacksmith but was later apprenticed as a clockmaker to his wife’s uncle (John Wyld I of Nottingham) in 1712. He made a clock for Nottingham Exchange Building in 1726 and was accepted as a Burgess of that city in 1728. Condition:Generally good condition, the brass on the dial needs cleaning, small scratch to the side of the case and a split to the base.
