A matched set of eight George IV ‘Gothic’ Windsor chairs, Buckinghamshire Including two armchairs, each with arched open backs, figured elm seats and turned legs joined by crinoline stretchers, one armchair in ash and cherry and with straight cross-stretcher, the other in yew, two chairs in yew, four in ash, each approx. 45cm wide, 39cm deep, 90cm high, seat height 44cm. A pair of Regency carved oak shell-back hall chairs attributed to Gillows The backs painted with family crests, above rectangular seats on octagonal tapering legs and ball feet, each 43cm wide, 38cm deep, 86cm high, seat height 45cm. (2) Provenance: The Estate of the Late Cherry Barker The shell and C scroll back is particularly associated with the firm of Gillows of London and Lancaster in the 2nd quarter of the 19th century. A pair of Gillows stamped hall chairs with this form of shell back are in the collection of Abbott Hall Art Gallery, Kendal. Gillows also made a set of 'shell back' hall chairs (not illustrated in their sketch books) for the Reverend Holland Edwards of Pennant, Conway, North Wales, in 1811. An early 20th century wicker reclining steamer chair by Dryad The arched ratcheted rectangular back flanked by flattened armrests, one with an aperture for a bottle or glass the other with a large aperture for magazines above a rectangular seat and pull-out angled footrest, with a brass trade badge to the reverse for DRYAD (Regd) Cane Furniture, 85cm wide, 130cm deep extended, 108cm high. An early 20th century satinwood and japanned Chinese Chippendale style armchair with a matching single chair attributed to Hille & Co, The armchair with an arched lattice back centred by a tablet with a Chinoiserie scene, the arms with lattice supports above a caned seat with velvet cushion above a fret carved frieze and legs, joined by a H-stretcher, with a side chair of matching design, the armchair, 66cm wide, 51cm deep, 98cm high. (2) Provenance: Private family collection, Berkshire The firm of Hille was founded in 1906 by Salamon Hille. Their Old Street manufactory aimed at high quality production with an emphasis on materials and craftsmanship. They produced furniture in a number of revivalist tastes supplying makers such as Hamptons, Maples and Waring and Gillows. The Chippendale revival Chinoiserie decorated furniture was introduced around 1914. Salamon's daughter Ray, who was to become a notable designer in her own right producing the firms acclaimed 'Art Deco' and 'Moderne' ranges, began her career at Hille painting the chinoiserie designs on these revivalist pieces.

A French Louis XVI style giltwood fauteuil, c.1900, the oval back with curled ribbon decoration and bow cresting, over swept, foliate capped arms on fluted, foliate carved sabre supports, the stuffover seat and back in pale tapestry style upholstery, faults, raised on turned, fluted legs with toupie feet, 38 ½in. (97.75cm.) high, 24 ½in. (62.25cm.) wide.

(94cm.) long, with handmade wooden shipping box.

Joined oak elbow chair, bears date 1692, Derbyshire pattern, scrolled cresting piece, panelled back, open scrolled arms, upholstered seat and arm pads, width 65cm.Condition report:The seat board has been replaced, probably when it was last reupholstered. Otherwise, most other elements seem contemporary to each other. The frame has some movement but is still fairly sound. The hatched panels to the front supports are probably later. Some old splits to the stretchers and lower left of the carved back panel. A small number of historic worm holes and mildew on the surface.
