A set of eight Chippendale style mahogany dining chairs, comprising two arm and six single chairs each with serpentine front. Each armchair height to top of back 101 cm, width across front of arms 60 cm. (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The chairs are in generally very good condition. They are all structurally sound with no loose joints and no damage to the knees. There are no losses to the splat backs and no evidence of any woodworm. There are some minor scuffs and marks around the extremities but no significant issues. The seat covers are all in generally good condition with no significant marks or staining.
A George III oak longcase clock, with 30 hour movement by Barber Winster with penny moon and dater aperture. Height 198 cm. CONDITION REPORT: We have located the weight and the pendulum. We have not had the movement running and, in our opinion, it requires an overall. The movement appears to be complete and when pressure is applied to the going train the crutch ticks away. When the hand is advanced the moon phase and date wheels appear to work also. The clock is currently not striking when manually advanced. The seat board is clearly old, and the cheeks have not been built up. The mask around the dial fits reasonably well. This suggests that the clock is not a marriage, but we cannot guarantee this. The movement clearly requires an overall. The case is quite primitive and very heavy timber. The hood mouldings are all a little loose but all present. The door is damaged at the bottom right-hand corner where the flat hinge sits. The left-hand bottom edge return moulding looks to have been replaced. The trunk door is not warped and closes as it should. The sides of the case are in good condition and the back board is original. The clock base looks to be quite short, but we cannot see any evidence of height reduction. The bottom mouldings and bracket feet appear to be original.
A 20th century period style armchair, in the Louis XV style, with cream upholstery and cabriole legs. Height 90 cm, width at arms 82 cm, seat height 46 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The armchair being modern is in extremely good condition with no structural issues and no damage. The fabric is clearly light in colour but does not seem to have any significant staining other than dust marks probably picked up in the saleroom.
A set of six Elliotts of Newbury mid century teak dining chairs, with vinyl back and seat. Height 79 cm, width at seat 47 cm, seat height 43 cm, depth 45 cm. CONDITION REPORT: All chairs are structurally sound with no loose joints. There is no evidence of any repairs to the woodwork. The seat covers are also all in generally good condition with no significant tears or splits. There are some very minor nicks to the Rexine on the edges of two of the chair backs and the front edge of one seat but these really are small.
An Arts & Crafts Sussex carver armchair, ebonised and with a rush seat. Height 85 cm, width at the arm 56 cm, seat height 45 cm, depth 40 cm, together with a Sussex corner chair (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The corner chair is structurally sound with no loose joints. It has the usual rubbing to the ebonised finish as one would expect. The seat is in reasonably good condition although very dirty. When viewed from the underside there are some breaks to the rushing. The armchair is loose at the left-hand arm join and there is a break where the left-hand arm joins the seat rail. It is loose at this point and requires repair. There is rubbing to the ebonised finish. The remaining bits of the structure are in good order and the seat serviceable but when viewed form underneath there are minor breaks.
Elizabeth Gabbitass a Windsor ash and elm armchair, with spindle and slatted back raised on turned legs united by stretchers, marked to the side E Gabbitass Worksop. Note: Elizabeth Gabbitass was the wife of John Gabbitass and Elizabeth continued the family business for a short time (1839-1844) after her husband passed. Height 106 cm, width at arms 62 cm, seat height 43 cm, seat depth 40 cm (see illustration).
A pair of Victorian mahogany hall chairs, with low fretwork carved backs, solid seats and raised on pierced side supports. Height to top of back 78 cm, width 47 cm, depth 37 cm. CONDITION REPORT: Both chairs are in good order only showing signs of age-related wear etc. One has very slight varnish loss to the seat probably from use and so it appears slightly lighter.
A late Victorian corner chair, upholstered in a mustard coloured material and raised on turned legs. Height 68 cm, width arm to arm 79 cm, seat height +/- 38 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The chair is structurally sound with no loose joints. The upholstery is in generally good condition. The seat is firm and there is no fading to the material and no holes. There is a small dirty mark to the left-hand side shoulder which we would hope would clean off but this is a minor criticism. The legs are all original and structurally sound but do have some scuffs. The castors are original and all present. The piece seems well sprung and there are no protruding springs or webbing.
Two Arts & Crafts Sussex corner chairs, ebonised and with rush seats. Height 71 cm, width diagonally 58 cm, seat height 41 cm, depth diagonally 54 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: Both chairs are structurally sound with no loose joints. Both have some wear to the ebonised finish. One seat is serviceable although a little loose in places. The second one has damage which should be visible from the image.
A large green leather upholstered Chesterfield style settee, deep buttoned with loose cushions. Height to top of back 71 cm, length +/- 204 cm, depth +/- 93 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: Although the hessian underside cover reaches to the corners there are indentations underneath this cover suggesting that the piece might have had bun feet at some point. These would have been turned circular feet that have pushed into the bottom of the piece rather than being screwed on. The leather is in generally good condition with all deep buttoning tight and present. There do not appear to be any holes in the leather. The seat cushions do have considerable wear particularly to the right-hand cushion which is dry and has lost some of the original surface. The centre cushion also has stress marks but not as much as the right-hand cushion. The left-hand cushion is in better condition than the other two. All are serviceable, the right-hand cushion has clearly been sat upon rather more than the other two.
A pair of Victorian mahogany chairs with upholstered backs, arms and seats the front legs raised on brass castors. Height 96 cm, width at arms 67.5 cm, seat height +/- 40 cm. CONDITION REPORT: Both chairs are structurally sound with no significantly loose joints. The frames are in generally good condition with no evidence of any woodworm. The upholstery to one chair is in very good order with only very minor blemishes. The second chair has a water or liquid stain to the left-hand side of the seat.
