One of the most romantic of Scottish ruined castles, it is dramatically sited on a high four acre plateau almost entirely surrounded by 160 foot sheer sea cliffs, the only approach being originally a treacherously narrow isthmus. From 1382 until 1715 it was the seat of the Keiths, successive Marischals, subsequently Earls Marischal in the peerage of Scotland. They built the surviving palatial ruins, including the tower house or keep and also the detached Marischal Aisle at Dunnottar Church. William Keith, 6th Earl Marischal was a leader of the Covenanters and a general on the Parliamentary side in the early years of the Civil War. He was much engaged in campaigns in Scotland and the North of England. In 1647-8 he changed sides and Dunnottar became a royalist stronghold. Charles II visited in 1650-1 and the Castle became the last royalist garrison to fall to Cromwell`s forces in 1652. Keith was imprisoned in the Tower of London until the Restoration. Following the Jacobite Rebellion of 1715 the Castle was forfeited and in 1720 was largely dismantled by the York Buildings Company. In 1925 it was bought by Weetman Pearson, 1st Viscount CowdrayGCVP, PC (1856-1927), who repaired and opened it to the public.
