A 19th century rosewood prie-dieu style upholstered chair on castors. CONDITION REPORT: Upholstery heavily worn, torn to corners of the seat, thin, discoloured and generally in need of replacement, wear to the finish throughout, wear and tear commensurate with age, the castors are brass, frame feels slightly loose.

A Huanghuali Yoke Back Side Chair:The elegantly shaped yoke top rail tenoned into the two slender stiles which run through the seat to become the back legs and is supported by the gently curved splat tongue and grooved into the top rail and into the seat frame, composed of standard mitre, mortise and tenoned construction and enclosed with a hard seat above a shaped apron tongue and grooved into the front legs, ending at the foot rest, supported by paired struts above stepped stretchers, H 110cm x D 43cm
Sperandio of Mantua (c. 1425-1504), Camilla Sforza (widow of Costanzo Sforza), bronze medal, bust three-quarters left wearing widow’s veil, rev., SIC ITVR AD ASTRA, a female figure seated on a seat composed of the foreparts of a unicorn and a hound; signed below, OPVS SPERANDEI, 83.2 mm (Hill 399; Arm. I, 74, 43; Pollard 90 = Kress 130; Bargello 114), pierced and with second attempted piercing, a very fine early cast. Ex Leu 74, Zurich, 19-21 October 1998, lot 725. The inscription on the reverse (“this is the way to the stars”) is from Virgil’s Aeneid, Book IX, 64. Sperandio’s design must have been influenced by the reverse of one of Matteo de’ Pasti’s medals of Sigismondo Malatesta showing Fortitude on a seat formed of foreparts of elephants; here the unicorn and hound represent Chastity and Fidelity.
