An ash and oak turned or ‘thrown’ chair, mid 17th century, of turned ash construction throughout, rectangular back and angled arms, triangular panelled oak seat, baluster turned arm finials and legs joined by stretchers. A joined oak panel back armchair, Leeds/ Halifax, dated 1642, shaped rectangular back flanked by carved scrolls and stylised foliage, the central panel carved with a lozenge issuing scrolls, downswept arms, twin plank seat, baluster turned legs, peripheral stretchers. For related examples and a discussion of turned chairs see page 470, Victor Chinnery, Oak Furniture, The British Tradition, Antique Collectors Club, 1979. A virtually identical pair of chairs originating from Birstall Church are now housed on public view at Oakwell Hall, near Huddersfield.
A joined oak panel back armchair, possibly West Midlands, mid 17th century, marked with initials ‘I M’ and ‘T K’, rectangular back with shaped and scroll carved cresting, the central panel carved with twin S shaped scrolling foliate motifs centred by a palmette, shaped arms with scroll terminals, solid seat, moulded frieze, block and square section baluster legs, peripheral stretchers. Square-section legs and arm-supports of this kind are extremely rare on English armchairs, which are normally turned; for an example see Plate 82, page 88, Tobias Jellinek, Early British Chairs and Seats, Antique Collectors’ Club, 2009. A workshop group of six armchairs with similar square baluster posts from Essex County, Massachusetts, New England, is recorded and discussed by Benno Forman in American Seating Furniture 1630-1730, pp. 148-50; and illustrated by an example in the Winterthur Museum (Cat. 18). Jellinek also illustrates a stool with square baluster legs, Plate 325, p. 243.
A George III mahogany framed and upholstered wing chair, circa 1760, outswept arms, bowfront seat, serpentine fronted seat, on carved cabriole legs and pad feet, 105cm high, 98cm wide, 80cm deep. A Regency painted armchair, circa 1815, rectangular back with gadrooned finials and centred by a pierced splat, bowfront upholstered seat, downswept arms, with wrythen turned uprights above carved stylised flowerheads, on fluted tapering legs, 90cm high, 62cm wide, 55cm deep. Provenance: Sir William and Lady Forbes, formerly of Maida Vale and Northgate, Regent’s Park and thence by descent.
