An early Victorian oak throne like chair with reeded finials over a shaped back carved with Masonic symbols and leather upholstered dished seat, on a crossframe base joined by a bell metal shield engraved with a coat of arms. The back with a plaque inscribed 'This chair is made of the old oak and bell metal of York Minster destroyed by the fire May 20th 1840' 129cm high The coat of arms belong to the 2nd Earl of Zetland, who was appointed the Provincial Grand Master of Yorkshire North and East Ridings (including York) in 1840. He was subsequently appointed the Grand Master of the United Grand Lodge of England in 1844. This lot was previously sold at auction on 12 June 2002 in the Masonic Collectables auction at Bonhams Leeds and is illustrated in 'Masonic Memorabilia for Collectors' by Bill Jackman.
