Cork Interest: A simple early Edwardian mahogany Chair, with reeded decoration, the seat 'upholstered' in the African style using intertwined cured leather tongs. The chair bears a brass plaque which reads '2nd Boer War. Used at Signing of Peace of Vereeniging May 1902. Capt. of the Guard Maj. Charles Roper Lindsay.' (1) * Chas. Roper Lindsay was born in Cork on 29th Dec. 1868, and died in Qudeni, Natal in 1958. He was a direct descendent of Wm. Roper of Rathfarnham Castle. He was commissioned in the Royal Munster Fusiliers and served in Madras, India and Natal, South. Africa.
Josef Hoffmann (attributed) for J & J Kohn, a bentwood armchair, circa 1905, the stuffed seat and padded back within an angular frame with sloping arms and square section leg sunited by a low U stretcher, on squat bun feet, the seat supported on balls to each leg, original paper Jacob and Josef Kohn label to the underside, 87cm high Note: Kohn manufactured designs by several of the Wiener Werkstatte pioneers including Josef Hoffmann and Koloman Moser. A typical feature of Hoffmann's designs are the spherical seat 'supports' found on many of his most iconic chairs including the Fledermaus chair and the Sitzmachine.
John (Jack) Neville Stafford for Stafford Furniture, a Taperback armchair, designed 1956, angular black painted metal with golden fabric seat, 84cm high Note: John (Jack) Neville Stafford (1927-2012), worked as an engineer before retraining at the Royal College of Art in the early 1950s becoming a freelace Television designer. In 1955 he set up his own furniture company, Stafford Furniture, specialising in metal furniture production. His most famous design, the Taperback chair, designed in 1956 won the British Council of Industrial Design, Design of the Year award in 1958. The Taperback chair was a refinement of the organic forms used by other British designers such as Ernest Race in his famous Antelope chair.
