A MOTHER OF PEARL INLAID & MARBLE INSET THREE SEATER SETTEE The backrest and arms with marble inset panels and foliate mother of pearl inlay of birds, foliage, rockery and double happiness symbols, the reverse of the back rest also similarly inlaid 115cm high x 190cm wide x 62cm deep Condition: Condition Report There is a discoloured/yellowed varnish to the piece which is most visible to the seat, arm rests and back and on the mother of pearl inlay where it has flaked and revealing the whiter/brighter mother of pearl beneath. The arms appear strong but back rest has some movement particularly to the left corner. The three seat panels with splits and vertical losses which would require filling. General wear and tear. Ca. 1504-1450 BC. This green-glazed steatite scarab is inscribed with the cartouche of Thutmose III of Dynasty 18. The scarab is naturalistic formed creating the appearance of a scarab beetle, the reverse is inscribed by flanked by mirror images of the symbolic ‘Seat of Isis’, the cartouche at the top of the scarab reads Mn-khpr-re (the royal throne name of Thutmose III). Beneath, Goddess Isis is pictured as a magnificent bird spreading her wings. Cf. Andrews, Carol, 1994 Amulets of Ancient Egypt. Ca. 1st-2nd century AD. A votive bone carving depicting a seated deity of great intricacy and meticulous detail. The figure is shown enthroned upon an elaborately ornamented seat, with incised details carefully rendered upon the deity's garment. The reverse of the carving is equally worked, attesting to the high level of skill possessed by its creator. Roman votive bone carvings were popular in the ancient world as objects of religious devotion and were often created in a variety of sizes and forms.
