Jimmie Mattern aviation pioneer signed 1927 Air Mail cover with 27 8 27 Soranton postmark. Signed in 1934 with details annotated on reverse. American aviator. Mattern undertook a number of aviation world records, including twice attempting to break the world record for aerial circumnavigation set by Wiley Post and Harold Gatty. Both attempts failed; the second in 1933 resulted in a crash landing and subsequent rescue by Eskimos and Sigizmund Levanevsky in Siberia. In a twist of fate, Mattern would join the search for Levanevsky after he went missing in 1937. Levanevsky was never found. In 1928, Mattern sold an air plane to an oil company in Texas owned by Michael Benedum. Benedum would later become a frequent financial backer of Mattern's flying activities. In 1937, Mattern was hired as the aeronautical director for the Benedum and Tree's oil company. Starting in 1938, Mattern was a Lockheed test pilot on the P-38 Lightning and during the war helped develop the 'Piggyback' two-seat version that significantly reduced training accidents. In 1946 he was diagnosed at the Mayo Clinic with a ruptured blood vessel in his brain perhaps due to repeated excessive G-forces experienced while demonstrating P-38s and was unable to fly again because of the condition. After losing his ability to fly, Mattern and his wife became real estate brokers and then operated a travel agency. He also supported the space program, attended three Apollo launches and had his pilot's license carried to the moon aboard Apollo 11. He also marketed aviation calculators known as the Mattern computer, a course and mileage slide rule, in the late 1940s. Good Condition. We combine postage on multiple winning lots and can ship worldwide. UK postage from £3.99, EU from £5.99, Rest of World from £7.95

WAR OF THE SECOND COALITION. AN EXTRAORDINARY NORTH ITALIAN ANTI-NAPOLEONIC GNARLED OLIVE WOOD WALKING CANE, PROBABLY VERONA, DATED 1797 AND 1799 extensively and symbolically carved, the handle in the form of a chained monkey on an elaborate seat, the reverse with double headed eagle and date 1797, a medallion bearing the letters MM/M flanked by a soldier and fasces with broken axe and phrygian cap, each above banner with cryptic inscription, the shaft with long Latin inscription on a spiralling belt, 103.5cm In the last line of the long inscription the anonymous virtuoso woodcarver declares (in translation) "I have made this stick... and carved it enigmatically." That is undoubtedly so, but it is clear the monkey is to be seen as a representation of the French, or Napoleon (who was sometimes ridiculed in this way by his enemies) or the French General, Scherer. The inscription also makes reference to the monkey believing he was devouring "tasty morsels prepared by his supporters at Verona... 1799" and blames "French brigands" and the "impious brood of atheists and Jacobins".The Battle of Verona was fought on 26 March 1799 between French forces under Scherer and the Habsburg Austrian army. The date 1797 is a reference to the so-called Veronese Easter. This week long revolt against occupying French forces began on 17 April.++Monkey's back legs damaged; condition otherwise very good, originally with a brass or other tip, now lacking
A FRENCH NAPOLEONIC ARMY GENERAL OFFICER'S COAT (L'HABIT DE GRAND UNIFORME D'OFFICIER GENERAL) PROVENANCED TO JOSEPH BONAPARTE, PRE 1813 dark blue wool with extensive gitlmetal broderie and gilt brass buttons, 101cm lClarificationFor the avoidance of doubt Mellors & Kirk makes no warranty as to this coat being personal to Joseph Bonaparte. The account of its seizure at the Battle of Vitoria and subsequent history is as stated.Given the enormous length of the Imperial train, it is to be expected that the ‘baggage’ would have included uniform of high ranking officers of the Grande Armee. Joseph as King would not have worn a coat of this type (which is Petite tenue). Provenance: Joseph-Napoleon Bonaparte (1768-1844), King of Spain (1808-1813); John Nevill 3rd Earl of Abergavenny (1789-1845) by whom seized at the Battle of Vitoria, 21 June 1813; thence by descent to the present vendors. Of impeccable provenance, there can be few more evocative historical objects, or one so redolent of the Grande Armee, than this magnificent coat of Napoleon's brother Joseph Bonaparte, King of Naples and Sicily, afterwards King of Spain. One of the many spoils of war seized by Wellington's officers and men at the Battle of Vitoria, Joseph Bonaparte's enormous baggage train of over 100 wagons became stuck in the town's narrow streets. His troops' morale shattered by Wellington's tactics and his subordinates' adroitness, the French fled and chaos quickly ensued as the British fell upon the treasure laden train, but this was not without irony, since Joseph had himself looted as much as he could cart away. As an unintended feint the pillage by the British allowed Joseph and his troops to escape. Wellington's army was by late afternoon in complete disarray and the opportunity to drive the French from the Iberian peninsula had been lost causing the Iron Duke to describe those involved as 'the scum of the earth'. Lieutenant the Hon. John Nevill of the 23rd Regiment of Foot witnessed the scene, which by early evening had descended into drunken revelry. Noticing an intoxicated soldier wearing the coat he ordered the man to hand it over. Nevill, who later inherited the earldom of Abergavenny and took Holy Orders brought the coat with him to the family seat of Eridge Castle, Sussex. It was photographed there in 1907 for the Connoisseur article Eridge Castle and Its Contents by R Nevill and L Willoughby, in which the "interesting souvenir of the Peninsular War" is described as being "in splendid preservation, the gold embroidery absolutely untarnished, this dark blue coat might have been made at the present day..." In the 20th century it was loaned to the Redoubt Fortress and Military Museum Eastbourne.
