Scottish School (19th Century), Portrait of Mrs Alexander Bannantyne Stewart, (nee Fanny Stevenson of Lytham), in a feather-trimmed cap and lace-trimmed black dress, oil on canvas, 112 x 87 x 87cm (44 x 34 x 34in). There is a statue of Alexander Bannatyne Stewart on the seafront near the Ferry Terminal at Rothesay. Stewart was a popular figure on the island and at the time of his death was Convener of the County of Bute. He was renowned for his love of art and he cultivated orchids at his home at Ascog. He was Commodore of the Bute Aquatic Club and Flag Officer of the Royal Northern Yacht Club. Sailing regattas in Rothesay Bay often ended with an impressive firework display launched from the decks of Stewart`s steam yacht. Ascog House, the seat of a branch of the Stewarts is a typical seventeenth-century Laird`s house. It is now owned by the Landmark Trust

A SET OF SIX REGENCY BRASS MOUNTED DINING CHAIRS^ THE PAINTED DECORATION ATTRIBUTED TO OLIVER MESSEL (1904-1978) the back rail with rope handle and delicately painted with stylised flowers in pink^ blue and green on an ivory ground^ on sabre legs with caned seat and a set of three elbow chairs painted to match^ 82-86cm h^ both early 19th c and later (9) Oliver Messel~s painted Regency caned dining chairs remain in their original setting at Flaxley Abbey and it is probable that the present chairs^ removed from the attics^ were intended for another room. What is certain^ however^ is that the skilful decoration almost certainly executed by Oliver Messel^ is identifiable in some of his most important schemes of the 1950s^ such as the interiors of the Dorchester Hotel and Rayne~s shoe salon in Old Bond Street. ++Flaking paint^ localised worm and repairs^ generally heavily encrusted with dirt and grime and showing the effects of longterm storage in a dusty/damp environment but highly decorative and unrestored.
