A large and rare English porcelain bough pot and cover, circa 1801-02Probably W(***) factory and decorated at Mansfield, of D shape with a high back and supported on four gilt bun feet, the interior with five stem-supports to the base, a large central panel finely painted and titled with 'A View of Edinburgh from the North West. Most respectfully dedicated to Sir James Stirling Bart. Lord Provost of the City', Edinburgh Castle and Arthur's Seat in the distance, flanked by richly gilded panels above a fluted border, the cover with five large and five smaller holes, 24.6cm high, title in puce script (2)Footnotes:ProvenanceTwinight CollectionIllustrated by Geoffrey Godden, Staffordshire Porcelain (1983), p.563, fig.729. This larger size of bough pot is much rarer than the similarly decorated examples on three feet. A related example is illustrated by C Barry Sheppard, Pinxton Porcelain (1996), p.224, fig.235. The addition of the raised back on the present lot makes it rarer still. The painting may have been done at the Mansfield workshops of William Billingsley. The view and dedication appear to have been taken directly from the frontispiece to 'Twelve Views in the Vicinity of the Metropolis of Scotland' published in 1801, coinciding with production at Mansfield (1799-1802). Sir James Stirling was Lord Provost in 1790-2, 1794-6 and 1798-1800. He was granted his baronetcy in 1792, coincidentally becoming Baronet Mansfield, of Ayrshire, rather than Nottinghamshire. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
