A PAIR OF 17TH CENTURY STYLE ITALIAN IVORY, SCARLET TORTOISESHELL AND EBONISED HALL CHAIRS, 19TH CENTURY, each shaped back with four pronounced C-scroll cutaways, the first chair back ivory inlaid with figures and arabesque panels, the second chair back reverse inlaid to depict the same subjects, the seats with line inlay and moulded edge, each front seat rail with tortoiseshell panel, raised on turned legs with wavy H-form stretcher. 125cm high
A SET OF TEN MOORISH STYLE STAMPED LEATHER AND OAK DINING CHAIRS, CIRCA 1900, each crest centred by a carved tablet between carved ears, over a brass studded leather panel stamped to depict a Moorish arcade with double-domed scroll-carved spandrels below, the seat with moulded edge and leather panel stamped to depict a flowerhead within voluted foliage, raised on Tuscan column legs terminating in blocks joined by an H-stretcher.

Sholto Johnstone Douglas (1871-1958) Portrait of Mary Catherine, Lady Stapleton (1849-1924) Signed, oil on canvas, 134cm by 100cm Mary Catherine (neé Gladstone) was the daughter of Adam Steuart Gladstone of Hazelwood, Hertfordshire. She married first Sir Francis Stapleton, 8th Baronet (1831-1899) but was widowed in 1899. In 1902 she married William Dalziel Mackenzie (1840-1928) Member of Parliament for Reading and later Truro and Woodstock. She lived with Mackenzie at his family seat, Fawley Court in Buckinghamshire, which was reputedly the inspiration for Toad Hall in Kenneth Graeme's Wind in the Willows. Sholto Johnstone Douglas was born in Edinburgh and studied in Paris, Antwerp and the Slade School of Fine Art. He was the third cousin of the 9th Marquess of Queensbury who as well as inventing the rules of modern boxing was also a key figure in the downfall of Oscar Wilde. During Wilde's trial for ''gross indecency'' he was released on bail and Sholto Johnstone Douglas stood surety for the bail money. See illustration

Fedorovich Brandenburg.

Re-upholstered and re-studded, perhaps 30-40 years ago.Height to seat 46cm.Each structurally good and strong.Upholstered and studded areas are good.One chair with surface split at top right hand corner of top rail.Some further general scuffs to extremities.Colour good and original.
A pair of unusual 1920s possibly Austrian oak hall chairs, each having single opposing arm rest, circular slat backs and rounded panelled seats, w.60cm. We only suggest Austrian, they could equally be Czech or Hungarian etc.Reasonably structurally sound, although there is some play when handled.Lacquered surface patina is worn to arms and extremities (patina is also lighter in these areas).Dowelled areas a little crudely finished.Timber is knotted in places, mostly to panelled seats.Height to seat is 45cm.Depth of chairs 36.5cm.Overall a little crude and provincial, rather than bespoke craftsman made.
Alvar Aalto (1898-1976) for Finmar Ltd - a pair of model 611 birch and upholstered pad back and seat stacking chairs, designed 1929, each labelled 'Finmar Ltd' and further stamped 'Aalto Design Made in Finland', w.48.5cm. Both quite structurally weak (mostly to joints at back supports).One chair with replacement front left leg (timber is light oak, not birch).Scuffs and knocks timber throughout.Upholstery well-worn and frayed at seams.
