Lot 1169

A pair of Prince of Wales Investiture chairs, designed by Antony Armstrong-Jones, Earl of Snowdon, Carl Toms & John Pound for the Investiture of The Prince of Wales on 1st July 1969, each with fabric upholstered seat. Width 54 cm, height 78 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: Both chairs are in structurally very good condition with no damage, no repairs and no restoration. There are no loose joints. The colour is generally good. There are one or two minor surface scuffs and scratches but no real condition issues. Both seats are a little marked and slightly faded but perfectly serviceable. The gilding to the plumes is first class.

Lot 1171

A pair of Victorian walnut side chairs, with exposed foliate carved showframes, deep buttoned backs and seats and raised on turned fluted front legs. CONDITION REPORT: Both chairs are in generally good condition with no significant issues. Both have minor losses to the foliate carving to the top of the back. One chair has had repairs where the top rail joins the stiles. These should be visible in the image. The repairs are structurally sound and serviceable. The same chair is structurally very sound with no repairs or restoration to the legs. The upholstery to the seat is in generally good order with only minor staining. The upholstered back is in good condition. The rear of the chair has some perishing to the material at the top of the oval back. Both chairs have minor old woodworm holes to the soft wood to the underside of the seat. This appears long gone. The second chair is structurally sound with no visible repairs to the woodwork. The upholstery is in generally good condition with only minor issues to the braiding. The same chair is slightly loose at the joint at the rear right leg.

Lot 1181

An Eero Saarinen tulip dining table and eight chairs, the eight chairs with seat pads, table width 121.5 cm, length 198 cm, with 1973 price list from Form International and colour brochure (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: We have no specific provenance with the suite other than the 1973 price list and brochure from Form International. We cannot see any manufacturer's marks or labels to any of the pieces. The only visible marking is a moulded “Made In England” beneath the table support. Having looked at all pieces it seems that many of the bases in particular have been refinished. They appear to have been resprayed. The table top is in good condition with no issues. The underside of the table has some minor flaking to the painted finish. The tulip shaped column appears to have been re-sprayed in recent times. There are some losses to the paint work around the extremities. Two of the 8 chairs have one small visible stress fracture to the backs. A third has a more significant crack which has movement and runs for approximately 7 cm. All chairs in our opinion have been re-finished in the same manner as the table base. There are some minor losses to the re- finished paintwork. The seat pads are a little faded but are all serviceable. The table and chairs are sold with a furniture price list from Form International from Sept 1973 together with a fire red nylon homespun swatch for the seat fabric and a Form International colour brochure. The dimensions of the table correspond to those given in the price list.

The four single chairs have very slight movement at the rear joints. There do not appear to be any repairs to any of the single chairs. There is no woodworm. The polish to the backs of the single chairs is a little dry. The two armchairs are structurally very solid. One has a minor stress fracture where the bottom of the oval back joins the chair stile. There is no movement. There is no woodworm to either armchair. The polish is a little rubbed on the top of all arms. The upholstery is serviceable to all single chairs. The armchairs have sprung seats and one is a little soft and beginning to sag. All chairs have the usual scuff marks and knocks to the legs.

A set of four Hepplewhite style mahogany dining chairs, early 20th century, the pierced backs carved with ears of corn and palmettes above bowfront stuffover seats and square tapering reeded legs with fan carved knees terminating in spade feet. All chairs have had effective repairs to the same place where the right hand stile meets the top arch. All repairs are visible on inspection and one in particular where there is a let in splice. The same chair has no other faults. Chair two has an old pegged repair to the right hand upright beneath the oval back. Again this is a good and effective repair only visible from the rear. The same chair has had an old spliced repair to the rear left hand leg. Chair three is in good order. Chair four has had a break to the left hand rear upright beneath the oval back. The chairs are all similarly upholstered. One chair has slightly more sag in the seat than the remaining three. All are however serviceable. We can see no evidence of any woodworm.
