The present lot belongs to a group of Chinese porcelains commissioned by the Vietnamese Royal family to Jingdezhen and exchanged via means of diplomacy in the 18th and 19th century. They became known as ‘Bleu de Hue’, after the city which was the seat of the Vietnamese Kings at the time.Being destined for court use, the designs were made by Vietnamese artists and sent to Jingdezhen for execution, resulting in a very distinct aesthetic vocabulary and range of motif. Moreover, the patterns used were very strictly regulated, with specific designs destined for the King, for Royal princes, other for concubines, and for the ladies of the Royal court. The decoration of dragons on the present bowl, paired with the mark to the base ‘nei fu’ in Chinese, or ‘nhut’ in Vietnamese, marks this bowl as a product destined solely for the King’s personal use, specifically during the reign of Dực Tông (1847 – 1883).See an example sold at Christie's, in the Important Annamese Ceramics from the Mr. and Mrs. Robert P. Piccus Collection sale, 7 December 1984, lot 115.Condition Report: 品相報告There are firing flaws to the rim, nicks and a shallow chip to the foot rim, some wear to the surfaces.
