An original salvage relic of the sinking disaster in the St. Lawrence River Seaway June 1914,well-crafted in mahogany on cast iron swivel base, circular format ñCaptains-chairî-pattern having curved splat-back with carved relief design of shipping company flag, and with turned vertical supports to each arm segment, leather stuff-over drop-in seat, surmounting heavily ornate art-nouveau-style tripod base with threaded locking-screw swivel-support, rear splat bearing applied brass plaque inscribed ñCarter`s Salvage Co - Recovered from the wreck of the Empress of Ireland on the St. Lawrence River 3:6:14î Built on the Clyde in 1905, the Canadian Pacific Line vessel the ñEmpress of Irelandî was in collision with a Norwegian Freighter the SS Storstadt in thick fog in the early hours of 29th May 1914. The Empress was fatally holed amidships and due to various circumstances sank within 14 minutes with a loss of some 1,100 lives, although 450 were saved. A contentious investigative report of the time blamed the Norwegian captain, although later conclusions were to apportion equal blame. Nevertheless, this disaster ranks as one of the worst in the history of merchant naval shipping. Much was salvaged from the wreck with artefacts being contained in both Canadian and British museum collections. This formerly in the White Star Cunard Collection. (1)
