Both volumes signed and numbered 377 of 400 by the editor, Robert Benson);'The Holford Collection - Westonbirt - Illustrated with 101 plates' (Oxford University Press 1924) signed and numbered 138 of 300 by the editor, Robert Benson;'The Holford Collection - Westonbirt - A catalogue of 12 illuminated manuscripts and 107 pictures' (The Medici Society 1924).The Holford Collection was, with the Hertford Collection, one of the two greatest British art collections of the 19th century. It was amassed by Robert Holford (1808-1892) and divided between his seat, Westonbirt in Gloucestershire, and his London home, Dorchester House in Park Lane. His son and heir, Sir George Holford (1860-1926), in association with the Burlington Fine Arts Club catalogued the Westonbirt Collection in 1924. Sir George died in 1926 and the Dorchester House catalogue published by his executors in the following year. The Holford Collection was sold in three record-breaking sales by Christies in 1927 and 1928. Also included with the lot is a handwritten record of the sales' results (the July 15th 1927 sale complete with buyers' names).
A mid-19th century fruitwood Windsor chair: pierced splat and spindle back above a shaped bow and shaped patinated elm seat, raised on four turned, tapering and slightly splaying legs united by a crinoline stretcher (LWH 59 x 50 x 91 cm highest point of back)Condition Report: The chair has an old repair to the middle of the crinoline stretcher to the underside, one leg at the front has a vertical historic dark crack (not visible from the front), there are other smaller cracks. The back legs have been tipped and there are scuffs commensurate with age. A small square section away from the underside of the seat towards the edge (nice colour to seat). The front right arm is sadly completely off and re-affixed. There are other holes around that area. The left arm (looking from the front) is also plugged. There scratches on the bow at the back. The splat is in good order. Overall the chair has scuffs and knocks commensurate with age but is still a good looking chair.
