PITT WILLIAM: (1759-1806) The Younger. British Prime Minister 1783-1801, 1804-06. L.S., W Pitt, one page, 4to, Cambridge, 3rd September n.y. (annotated 1780 in pencil in an unidentified hand), to a gentleman. Pitt states that, as the dissolution of parliament has taken place, 'I beg leave again to solicit the honor of your support as a candidate to represent the University of Cambridge, & to assure you, that if you should have the goodness to favor me with your assistance on this occasion I shall ever retain the warmest sense of so essential an obligation'. In a postscript Pitt adds that the day of election will be Saturday, 9th September. Some light overall age wear and minor traces of former mounting to the verso and with one small, neat tear to the right edge, not affecting the text or signature, about VG At the age of 21 Pitt contested the University of Cambridge seat during the General Elections of September 1780 but lost. The young politician coveted the constituency and in the elections of March 1784 gained a personal triumph when he was elected as a Member of Parliament for the University of Cambridge. He continued to represent the constituency for the rest of his life.

Ramsay MacDonald, one page, 4to, Whitehall, 11th November 1936, to Sir James Marchant, on the printed stationery of the Privy Council Office, marked ‘Private’. MacDonald states that he thinks ‘it would be a very appropriate thing to recognise the unique position of the firm you mention’ and had always had it in mind, but no opportunity to act had arisen, and further continuing ‘I have now no direct responsibility as regards Honours and all I can properly do is to see that names and claims are considered. I should be very glad to do that in this case. I know already, however, that the list is pretty long and presents problems like those of the needle’s eye’; Stanley Baldwin (1867-1947) British Prime Minister 1923-24, 1924-29 and 1935-37. A.L.S., Stanley Baldwin, two pages, 8vo, 10 Downing Street, Whitehall, 1st May 1929, to Sir Frederick, on the printed stationery of the Prime Minister. Baldwin states that his correspondent’s kind and generous letter has warmed his heart and continues ‘It is early yet to prophecy but I feel quietly confident of the result’, further remarking ‘I feel Linlithgow is hopeless on a split vote but there is no man I would rather see beaten than Shinwell: he is a bad type’; Harold Wilson (1916-1995) British Prime Minister 1964-70, 1974-76. T.L.S., Harold Wilson, with holograph salutation and subscription, one page, 4to, 10 Downing Street, Whitehall, 7th February 1966, to Sir Charles Wheeler, on the printed stationery of the Prime Minister. Wilson states that he is very sorry that a debate in the House on foreign affairs will prevent him from attending a dinner and continues to remark ‘I had been looking forward to meeting you and your guests and to seeing something of the Exhibition but I am afraid there is nothing for it. I am speaking in the afternoon and feel that I must be on the Bench for the rest of the evening’. Some light age wear and creasing and a few minor stains and traces of former mounting to Baldwin’s letter, only very slightly affecting the text but not the signature. G to VG, 3 Rev. Sir James Marchant (1867-1956) British Eugenicist, Social Reformer & Author. Stanley Baldwin’s correspondent may have been Sir Frederick Milner (1849-1931) British Politician who had served as Member of Parliament for Bassetlaw from 1890-1906. Emmanuel Shinwell (1884-1986) British Politician who was elected as Member of Parliament for Linlithgowshire at the 1922 General Election having unsuccessfully stood in 1918. He lost his seat in 1924 but was re-elected at a by-election in 1928. In the second Labour Government of 1929-31 he was appointed Financial Secretary to the War Office by Ramsay MacDonald.  Sir Charles Wheeler (1892-1974) British Sculptor, President of the Royal Academy 1956-66.

Storia di un Burattino, 1st edition, Florence: Felice Paggi, 1883, wood-engraved frontispiece and 61 text illustrations by Enrico Mazzanti, 4 pp. publisher's list at end, pp. 15/16 detached with marginal archival paper repair at gutter and upper corner, small tear to frontispiece (not affecting image), some light spotting and toning, stitching tender at front, front endpaper partly excised with presentation inscription, original red cloth gilt, spine faded with small splits to joints and small ink stain, some light damp stains, slight lean, 8vo (Qty: 1)Osborne p. 1007. First edition in book form of the classic tale of a wooden marionette who comes alive and whose nose grows every time he tells a lie. First serialised in Rome in the children's magazine Giornale per i Bambini from July 1881-January 1883, first under the title 'Storia di un burattino' and later 'Le avventure di Pinocchio'. In this version, a tragedy, Pinocchio ends up being hanged for his immoral behaviour, but at the publisher's request the book edition was expanded so that he finds redemption and eventually transforms into a real boy. The author, Florence journalist Carlo Lorenzini took the pseudonym Collodi from the Tuscan town where his mother was born.Provenance: Inscribed to Leone Fenzi (in Italian "A Leona Fenzi, il normo[?] Sebastian, con un buou bacio a felice auguri". Leonel Fenzi was the son of Italian Count Camillo Fenzi (1822-1873), and brother of Ida Copeland (née Fenzi, 1881-1964), who married Ronald Copeland of the Spode-Copeland china company, and became a Conservative MP, defeating Oswald Mosley for the Stoke seat in the 1931 general election. Thus by descent to the present owners.
