An aluminium fern patterned garden bench, with wooden slatted seat, white painted. Height to top of back 91 cm, width across arms 113 cm, maximum depth +/- 55 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The bench is structurally sound and in generally good order with the exception of cosmetics. The paint is beginning to flake and discolour. The slats have lost much of their original finish but are not rotten or significantly loose. All of the screw heads and nuts holding the slats in place are rusty. There has also been some shrinkage of the slats away from the sides of the seat.
A Chinese Chippendale style side chair, 20th century with lacquered panel to back, loose cushion and cane seat raised on moulded blind fretwork legs. Height 99 cm, width across seat 53 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The chair is structurally sound with no loose joints. It is in generally good condition and of good colour. The front top edge of the arched back is rubbed and bruised with small losses to the polish and timber. It is slightly rough to touch. The back is in good order as are the stiles. The bergere seat beneath the cushion is in good condition. All fretwork corner spandrels are present. The legs are all in good order as are the stretchers. The only real blemish is to the front edge of the top rail as stated.
A 19th century mahogany rectangular stool, with drop in seat and moulded legs with stretchers. Height 46 cm, width 48 cm, depth 38 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The stool is structurally sound with no loose joints. Three of the four joints do have shrinkage gaps between the side rails and the corner blocks. One knee corner has a loss. There is no evidence of any woodworm. The legs and stretchers do not show any signs of any repairs or restoration. However, the polish is discoloured and there are numerous surface dings and marks. The drop in seat pad is fully upholstered and appears to be in good order. n our opinion the stool is late George III and pre Victorian.
A cast iron cell patterned garden bench seat. Height to top of back 89 cm, width 188 cm, maximum depth +/- 55 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The bench is structurally sound and appears to be in generally fairly good order. There have clearly been some repairs to the back, weld marks being visible at the top right-hand corner and around some of the circular sections of the latticework. The back also shows fractures where it joins the base. The repaired sections are visible to the right-hand side of the back and may well be visible from our images. It does not look as if the back has been off but welds appear in places indicating breaks in the original ironwork. The arches between the legs have also had repairs as have the rear leg joints on the left-hand side. The right-hand side appears fine. The latticework seat has also had welded repairs in places. It is a little difficult to see the full extent of the repair work due to the paint. The bench does however appear to be structurally very sound.
A late 19th century carved oak settle, continental with carved panelled back, lift top seat and raised on scroll feet. Height 105 cm, width 150 cm, depth 46 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The settle is structurally sound. There are no loose joints. The right-hand rear carved figurehead is a little loose as is the left. The left figure has a very small loss to the base. The top rail is in good condition. The back panels have all shrunk a little and there are slight gaps visible. The seat is flat and not split or warped but does have some old surface stains. The sides and front of the settle are in good order and simply dusty. The rear panels are original and in good order. We can see no evidence of any woodworm.
