The verso with later batons added for strengthening. Some typical old decay mainly around the feet and stretchers. The chair is structurally sound. The left-hand scroll is split/damaged (as photographed). Further old decay around the front legs and some wear to the front stretcher.

A 17th Century Joined Oak Wainscot Chair, probably Yorkshire/Leeds, the top rail carved with scrolls and vines above a fielded back support with S-shaped carved flowerheads and lunette carving above downswept arms, the boarded seat above a lunette-carved seat rail, on gun barrel turned forelegs joined by a stretcher61cm by 44cm by 116cmStruturally sound. The boarded seat has numerous splits and various heavy decay around the seat frame, seat rail, turned legs and stretchers. Later stretcher/ seat board added to the underside for strenthening.

The pierced spandrels around the legs have various repairs. With some general scuffs around the legs and cross stretcher. The sofa is structurally sound. The underside has previous signs of nails from either upholstery or webbing. The upholstery is in reasonable condition.Provenance: From a deceased estate in North Yorkshire.

Small split/repair to the carved hand grip (as photographed).
