RHODES CECIL J.: (1853-1902) British Businessman and Politician in South Africa, Prime Minister of the Cape Colony 1890-96. An ardent supporter of British Imperialism, Rhodes was instrumental in organising the Jameson Raid, which, although botched and ineffective, was an inciting factor in the Second Boer War. Rhodes would later play a significant role in the Siege of Kimberley from October 1899 - February 1900. An excellent A.L.S., C. J. Rhodes, three pages, 8vo, n.p. (on a moving train), n.d. (c.1890), to [Julius] Weil. Rhodes announces, 'I feel sure Vryburg is to be won, but we must work' and continues to provide his correspondent with instructions, 'Frank Johnson will not be able to leave his fighting. You should communicate with Fuller and Sivewright. I wish you to at once send someone to Vryburg, the camp Taung, Kuruman and Gordonia and register all progressives both Dutch and English. Gordonia most especially. Ask Goodyear from me if he will do it. Kindly advance money and debit me. He should start at once', concluding his letter by remarking 'I am sure we shall win the seat especially if registration bill does not go through' and apologising for his handwriting as the train he is travelling on is shaking. A letter of fine content. Some extremely light, very minor age wear, VG Julius Weil, an English merchant, had been the first Jew to settle in Mafeking in 1878. His family firm, which evolved into the Imperial Transport Service, was responsible for the provisioning of Mafeking during the siege of 1899-1900. Lieutenant-Colonel Sir Frank Johnson (1866-1943) English Explorer, Soldier and Entrepreneur. Sir James Sivewright (1848-1916) Scottish Businessman and Politician of the Cape Colony. A strong political ally of Rhodes, Sivewright was influential in obtaining support for Rhodes to take power and become Prime Minister of the Cape Colony in 1890. In December 1889 a chance meeting occurred between Frank Johnson, James Sivewright and Cecil Rhodes in Cape Town which resulted in the 23-year-old adventurer being persuaded to head a Pioneer Column. The Pioneer Corps had been raised by Rhodes and his British South Africa Company as a military force to assist in the annexation of the territory of Mashonaland, later part of Southern Rhodesia, in 1890. Johnson and his men were successful in securing Matabeleland and Mashonaland before the Germans, Portuguese or Boers could, and the British Union flag was hoisted on the kopje overlooking Fort Salisbury on 13th September 1890. Johnson himself was not present at the official parade and flag raising having headed to Hartley Hills in his quest to find gold. The Pioneer Corps were officially disbanded on 1st October 1890 and each member was granted land on which to farm. The town of Vryburg, in the North West Province of South Africa, was situated on Cecil Rhodes's great northern railroad which ran from Cape Town, through the diamond fields in Kimberley and northwards beyond the Victoria Falls. In 1885 the British seized the town and incorporated it into British Bechuanaland, which would later become part of the Cape Colony in 1895. During the Second Boer War a British Concentration Camp was built at Vryburg to accommodate Boer women and children.

Wardate A.L.S., Austen Chamberlain, one page, 8vo, Whitehall, 6th February 1917, to 'My dear Mary', on the printed stationery of the India Office. Chamberlain announces 'A rather distant view of the King's procession across the Horse Guards Parade tomorrow can be got from one of my windows here' and continues to invite any of his correspondent's family to take advantage of the view, adding that they should ask for Mr. Wilson who will have instructions and concluding by remarking 'I shall be at Cabinet'. With blank integral leaf (some slight traces of former mounting to the verso). Together with an unrelated printed Admittance Ticket issued by the United Service Club on the occasion of Coronation Day, 22nd June 1911, allowing a lady entrance by the Writing Room for her allocated seat, numbered 636. Some light age wear and minor traces of former mounting to the verso. VG, 2 The coronation of King George V (1865-1936) and Mary of Teck (1867-1953) took place at Westminster Abbey on 22nd June 1911. As a result of World War I the empires of the King's first cousins Tsar Nicholas II of Russia and Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany fell, while the British Empire expanded to its greatest effective extent. In 1917 King George V became the first monarch of the House of Windsor, renamed from the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha as a result of anti-German public sentiment.
JELLICOE JOHN: (1859-1935) 1st Earl Jellicoe. British Admiral of the Fleet who commanded the Grand Fleet at the Battle of Jutland in May 1916 during World War I. Vintage signed postcard photograph of Jellicoe standing in a three quarter length pose wearing his ceremonial uniform and medals. Signed ('J R Jellicoe') in bold, dark fountain pen ink with his name alone at the head of the image. Together with a war date A.L.S., Jellicoe, one page, 8vo, Holwell House, Hatfield, 13th March 1918, to Sir Alfred. Jellicoe writes, in full, 'I notice that my peerage has been gazetted. Does that mean that I can now arrange with the Lord Chancellor for taking my seat in the House of Lords?, or is it necessary to await receipt of the Patent please'. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, otherwise VG, 2 Jellicoe had been conferred with the dignity of a Viscount of the United Kingdom on 7th March 1918, just less than a week before the present letter was written. The announcement that he had been raised to the peerage as Viscount Jellicoe of Scapa in the County of Orkney appeared in the London Gazette the following day, 8th March 1918.

A late 19th century Arts and Crafts aesthetic-style two-seater walnut settle; the underside of one arm stamped Liberty & Co., Regent Street, London; raised on square legs, 115cm wide CONDITION REPORT: There is quite a lot of scuffing and scratching generally all over with a 1.5cm small section out and away from the back left hand leg. There is a lot of discolouration to the trellis work at the back. General fading of trellis work. The seat has lightened considerably through usage and there is some evidence of splitting to some of the trellis work, i.e., under the arms etc. One of the trellis has broken completely and needs restoring. The arms are very faded particularly the left hand one, the right hand has a water ring mark to it. Condition commensurate with age. Light surface scratching commensurate with age. There does not appear to be a gouge between the queen's eye and nose. See image. The ribbon itself has darkened and is slightly frayed with age. Otherwise the medal appears in good honest genuine original condition.
A good pair of Art Deco period tan leather upholstered club chairs CONDITION REPORT: Height to the seat is approx. 39cm. Although the chairs have no major tears, rips or upholstery damage there is a large amount of “splash staining” and marking which as an overall appearance does not seem to detract too much from the overall look. It is possible that the chairs may not be specifically from the Art Deco period but they are certainly style of. The wooden block feet have some scuffing and scratching associated with usage and age. See images.
