A mahogany elbow day chair in Hepplewhite style, the pierced splat back with carved anthemion and bell flowers, a fluted crest, open moulded front arms, the serpentine fluted front caned seat, on front oval paterae capped moulded square legs with an `H` stretcher. (One back leg stamped W Gibbs.)
Lots 651- 832 were removed from the Library at Encombe House, Dorset, the seat of John Scott, 1st Earl of Eldon (1751-1858). The present house was begun in 1734 by John Pitt MP for Wareham who is now thought to be the architect. John Scott, 1st Earl of Eldon, was Lord Chancellor in William Pitt`s administration at the time he acquired Encombe in 1806. He was a valued advisor to both George III and George IV and was closely involved in the divorce proceedings against Caroline of Brunswick. BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER, folio, London, 1662, calf gilt, gilt edges; with another folio in matching binding.
