Ï’A William IV mahogany reclining armchair, circa 1835, the button upholstered and shaped wing back, reclining and the seat rising when leant back against, the sprung seat flanked by padded arms with scroll terminals, on baluster turned and lappet carved tapering legs at the front, terminating in brass caps and castors, this chair is very likely made to a Daw's patent design, 111cm high, 79cm wide, 92cm deep, together with a mezzotint of The Waterloo Heroes Assembled at Apsley House, after John Prescott Knight (1803-1881) and engraved by Charles George Lewis (1808-1880), published 1st October 1845, image size 55.5cm x 87cm, rosewood frame 120cm x 89cm Provenance: Inverailort, Inverness-shire, the former home of General Sir Alexander Cameron KCB (1781-26 July 1850), known for his distinguished military career with the Rifle Brigade during the Napoleonic Wars, until wounded in the throat at Waterloo in 1815. Cameron saw no more active service after 1815, and his later years were marked only by promotions and honours. In October 1815 he was made a knight of the Russian Order of St Anne; in 1830 he was promoted Colonel; in 1832 he was appointed Deputy-Governor of St. Mawes; in 1838 he was promoted Major-General, and made a KCB; in 1846 he received the Colonelcy of the 74th Regiment. On 26 July 1850 he died at Inverailort. The chair was removed from Inverailort, circa 1996, and then by direct descent to the current owner. Ï’ Indicates that this lot may be subject to CITES regulations when exported.
