James Basire THE ENCAMPMENT OF THE ENGLISH FORCES NEAR PORTSMOUTH engraving, 54cm x 178cm (21.25" x 70") This image shows a key moment of the `Battle of the Solent`, the sinking of the Mary Rose. Five paintings were commissioned by Sir Anthony Browne for Cowdray House in Sussex, his seat from 1543-1548, which record the campaigns against the French 1544-1545. The engravings after these paintings remain an important record as the originals were destroyed by fire in 1793. Produced at the behest of the Society of Antiquities, this example was published in 1778. James Basire was engraver to the Society and worked in a clear style which would have been faithful to the original work. William Blake was apprenticed to him from 1772-1778 and may well have had a hand in the engraving see illustration
