A Bristol blue and white delftware 'Electioneering' plate: inscribed 'Rolle for Ever' within a Merryman wreath cartouche, early 18th century, 21 cm diameter [minor chips and glaze losses to rim].* Note The Rolles of Stevenstone near Torrington were one of the leading landowning families of Devon and represented several Devon constituencies in Parliament. The present inscription could refer to one of two campaigns for election. The first in 1722 when John Rolle stood against three other candidates for the seat of Exeter and the second in 1741 when his son Henry stood for Barnstaple. They were both successful with Henry unopposed.Cf. Lincoln Halliman 'British Commemoratives' for a similar example and other delftware electioneering plates.
Of Coleridge InterestAn unusual Holm oak Quercus Ilex rectangular settle: in the Arts and Crafts manner, the slatted back with square section top rail centred by the word 'ILEX', having a solid seat and square section legs, united by plain stretchers, 213.5cm (7ft) long 100cm (3ft 31/4in) high.* Provenance - Sothebys Sale Chanters House Ottery St Mary 2006 - Lot 1 - The Former Property of The 2nd Baron Coleridge Beckwood - 2nd Baron Coleridge (1851-1927) was the third generation of his family to be a Judge. He was also the first peer to practice at the bar and a Liberal Member of Parliament for Sheffield Attercliffe from 1885-1894. He left the bench in 1923 and in his retirement continued to write and design pieces of furniture such as this settle.
A carved walnut armchair in the early 18th Century taste:, upholstered in gros-point tapestry, the cartouche-shaped back depicting a female figure with deer and hunting dogs, having curved stuff over arm supports and concave fronted loose cushion seat depicting a bird and flowering tree and shrubs, on shell decorated cabriole legs, terminating in hoof feet.
A 19th century white and gilt painted ballroom settee:, the reeded gilt frame with applied husk ornament having arched upholstered panel back, padded arm supports and upholstered stuff over seat in cream foliate design damask fabric on square tapered gaitered legs headed with paterae, terminating in brass cappings and castors, 187cm (6ft 11/2in) long.*Note Sold with a label giving provenance to Ugbrooke Park, Chudleigh - the seat of The Lord Clifford.
By Alfred Dunhill, a modern silver box, Birmingham 1964, also stamped 'Dunhill London' rounded rectangular form, the engine-turned decoration, gold thumb-piece the hinged cover allied with initials 'LMR', in a cloth case, length 9cm, approx. weight 3.5oz. The initials on the cover may relate to London Midland Region, and the cloth case may have been made out of seat fabric from a train.
