A 17th century and later oyster veneered walnut eight day longcase clock, signed William Coster, Londini Fecit, the flat top hood with barley twist pilasters flanking the 25cm square brass dial centred with a subsidiary second dial and signed with the makers name to the bottom edge, enclosing the two train movement striking on a saucer bell, the slender case with a rectangular door inlaid with two segmental boxwood roundels and conforming spandrels, the bottom board similarly inlaid, raised upon bun feet, 200cm high, two brass coated weights and pendulum Please note this lot is offered for sale in accordance with the Ivory Act 2018, Trevanion Auctioneers & Valuers LLP have applied for a de minimis exemption licence for the ivory in this lotRef: S8ZCQ2FPCondition Report; We do not believe that the hood has been converted from rising. Dial engraving appears good. We do not believe that the movement has ever been bolt & shutter/maintaining power. There are four ring baluster pillars. Pillars are pinned. Dial plate pinned. Seat board is likely to be a replacement however there are no signs of packing. In our opinion the movement and face have been overhauled yet there do appear to be original parts retained to the movement which are contemporary with the case. The escape wheel is clearly later. Glass to the hood is entirely replaced and not period. Spandrels are mercury gilded. Plate name engraving is spurious and originality cannot be determined. Escutcheon is ivory. Some minor losses to the veneer towards the base. Hinges replaced and later cut in. Some signs of restoration to the case, beading, and hood. Parquetry appears to be period. Sections of the case appear to have been later reinforced. Feet likely to be replaced.
