The period armchair is also in very good order with no issues. Five of the single chairs have no loose joints. One is slightly loose where the stiles join the seat rails. The single chair with the slightly loose joints has had an old repair to one rear leg. The repair is sound and secure and only visible on close inspection. The remaining five single chairs are in very good order. These chairs do not suffer from the usual problems where the bowed top rail joins the stiles. They are all in very good order in this area. The seats have clearly been fairly recently reupholstered and are in exceptionally good condition.

Lot 1322

A Gainsborough style armchair, with upholstered back and seat and raised on cabriole legs terminating in claw and ball feet. Width across arms 68 cm, height to top of back 97 cm. CONDITION REPORT: This is a 20th century chair. The chair is structurally very sound with no loose joints. The exposed frame is in generally very good order with no evidence of any repairs or restoration. There are some minor blemishes and marks as one would probably expect. The upholstery is worn and tired and the seat is sagging.

Lot 1358

There are no loose joints. We can see no evidence of any repairs. The rush seats themselves are all in surprising good order without the usual losses and breaks. The chairs do have some minor scuffs and marks and polish deterioration as one might expect with no significant issues.

Armchair width across top of arms 61 cm, height to top of back 101 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The armchair and two of the single chairs are structurally sound with no loose joints, no significant damage and no restoration. Two of the single chairs have had breaks to the stiles. This is just above the seat pad on the right-hand rear leg of one chair and in the same place but on the left leg of the second chair. There is movement at one of these repairs. All chairs have scuffs and marks around the legs and stretchers. The leatherwork whilst serviceable is in in generally tired and worn condition. One chair in particular has a missing section of leather on the side rail.

Lot 1417

A Georgian mahogany tub chair, with exposed moulded showframe and upholstered back and seat and raised on turned tapered reeded front legs terminating in castors. Width across front of arms 60 cm, height of top of back 84 cm (see illustration).

Lot 1420

A Victorian walnut framed ladies chair, well carved and with deep buttoned back and stuffover seat and raised on cabriole front legs terminating in castors. CONDITION REPORT: The chair frame is structurally very sound. The back and arms are tight and secure and there is no movement. The legs are all original and in good order with no repairs or restoration. The castors are original. There do not appear to be any losses to the carving and only minor marks and scuffs to the frame. The deep buttoned back and seat are both very dirty and stained but there is no sagging to the seat or back and no springs protruding through the hessian beneath. We can see no evidence of any woodworm.

Lot 1451

A 19th century mahogany bergere armchair, with tapered front legs terminating in spade feet and with brass castors (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The chair is structurally sound with no loose joints. We cannot see any evidence of any repairs to the frame or legs. The cane retaining strip below the rear of the top rail is slightly springing but other than this there are no issues with the frame. The canework is in generally good order and is serviceable. There are no significantly damaged areas and only very minor breaks to the odd single strand of canework. The most affected area is at the rear of the caning below the seat cushion. The cane is however still taut and serviceable. The height to the top of the seat from the floor excluding the cushion is just under 29 cm. Height to top of back 85.5 cm. Width across arms 62 cm. Width between arms at front 57 cm. Height from floor to top of front seat rail 29 cm. Depth of seat 55 cm. Height from floor to underside of front rail 24 cm.

Lot 1460

A 19th century mahogany child's highchair, with bergere seat and footrest raised on turned legs with stretchers. Width across arms 34 cm, height of top of back 84 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The chair is structurally very sound with no movement at the joints. We can see no evidence of any significant damage, no repairs and no restoration. The seat is in very good condition with no breaks to the cane work. The chair has some very minor traces of old long gone woodworm which is only visible on very close inspection. In our opinion this is not problematic.

Lot 1464

A Carolean style armchair, the upholstered back and seat with horsehair filling. 69 cm wide, 109.5 cm high.

Lot 1473

A set of eight early 19th century oak Hepplewhite style dining chairs, with drop in seats and raised on tapered legs of square section. Width across front of seat 51 cm. CONDITION REPORT: Five of the eight chairs are sturdy with no loose joints. Three are a little loose at the back where the side rails join the stiles. They are however serviceable. One of the three is missing its front stretcher. Many of the chairs have old pegged repairs to the rear legs particularly around the area where they join the back rail and the side rails. The repairs are generally effective. All of the back rails and splats are in good order. The seat frames are in good condition but the upholstery dirt. There are no repairs to the actual legs other than the pegged and dowelled repairs mentioned.

Lot 1481

An antique Windsor style spindle backed armchair, with slatted seat and raised on angled legs. Width across arms 48 cm, height to top of back 88 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The chair does have some signs of woodworm. The top rail has numerous woodworm holes. The worm does not appear to be active but we would suggest treatment in any event. There are also woodworm holes in other area of the frame but the only significant area is to the left hand facing arm. This has detached at the joint from the rear left hand upright and whilst we believe the worm to be gone there is powdering and flaking where the arm joins the back. The timber whilst not soft is obviously enough to cause powdering. Other than this broken joint the chair is structurally sound and the overall condition is very good.

Lot 1510

A pair of large throne type armchairs, the backs and seat upholstered in woolwork tapestry and raised on cabriole legs terminating in claw feet. Width across arms 75 cm, height to top of back 122 cm. (545)

Lot 1511

A set of ten Arts & Crafts influence oak dining chairs, with embossed leather backs and seats with studded surrounds and raised on turned legs united by stretchers. Width across seat fronts 44.5 cm, height to seat back 106.5 cm (see illustration).

Lot 1517

A late 18th/early 19th century Windsor style armchair, with low two tiered back, shaped solid seat and raised on angled legs. Width across arms 61 cm, height to top of back 83 cm (see illustration).

Lot 1536

A pair of George III Hepplewhite period gilt wood and gesso side chairs, with serpentine front rails and raised on cabriole legs. Width across seat 65 cm, height to top of back 93 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: Both chairs have minor traces of old long gone woodworm when viewed from the underside. In our opinion this is not problematic, the holes being fairly sparse. The front legs on both chairs are structurally sound with no loose joints. The rear legs on both chairs have metal bracing hoops from the top of the leg to the inside edge of the seat frame. These have clearly been in position a long time and there is very little movement at the joints. The gilding and gesso work around the tops of the inside of the rear legs is partially missing as a result. The front right hand facing leg of one chair has had a break but the repair is effective. The backs of both chairs are sound and secure but there have been some minor repairs over the years. There is no current movement anywhere. The gilding may well be original. The seats are reasonably well upholstered with no sagging and the webbing is intact.

Lot 1571

A large Victorian Falkirk garden bench, with three cast iron supports and slatted seat. Length 240 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The bench has five replacement pine slats. The very top slat is missing. When rocked from side to side there is movement of +/- 2”. There do not appear to be any breaks or losses to the ironwork. We are fairly sure about this however the bench has been repainted on several occasions. Despite the sideways movement the bench could be used in its current state but better fitting replacement slats would help the sturdiness.

Lot 1604

A pair of Regency mahogany hall chairs, the carved backs with centre shield above solid seats and turned front legs. Width across seat 44 cm, height to top of back 95 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The chairs are in original and restored condition. They are essentially a good colour. The backs of both chairs are in good condition. The seats are also in good order with no splits. They have numerous old dings and dents however. The front rails and front legs to both chairs are solid and secure with no repairs and no restoration. The side rails to one chair have some evidence of old long gone woodworm. The same chair is secure at the back joints and the rear legs are in good order. The second chair has no evidence of any woodworm. The rear joints are solid. There is no movement at the joints. Both chairs are very dirty and require a good clean.

Lot 1610

A Victorian papier mache occasional chair, inlaid with mother of pearl and with bergere seat. Width across arms 50 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The chair is in generally good order. There are no loose joints and all legs are structurally sound. The canework is clearly fairly recent and again in very good order with no significant issues. The chair does have minor blemishes around the bottoms of the legs but no significant scuffing or marking. The serpentine splat back is structurally sound but appears to have had an old break and repair just below the top rail. There is an oak bracing bar which is the same colour as the splat which supports the back. This may not be original but does not detract from the piece.

Lot 1621

A Victorian style cast iron garden bench, with pierced cast back and slatted seat. Length 184 cm, height to top of back 108 cm, seat depth 42 cm.

Lot 1622

A set of seven oak armchairs, with solid seats and raised on cabriole legs. CONDITION REPORT: Five of the chairs are in generally very good order with no major condition issues. There do not appear to be any repairs and no significantly loose joints. One of the five has some water staining to the seat. The sixth single chair is also structurally sound and in generally very good order but is missing the rear turned stretcher. This does not affect the stability. The seventh chair has a visible gap to one of the seat joints but there is no movement. The same chair has some filler to the left and right front corner of the seat indicating a drilled and pegged repair. The chair is structurally sound with no joint movement. The final chair is also structurally solid but has had some work. This final chair is of slightly different design to the other seven. It is the one with the crinoline stretchers. The arms are also slightly different in shape as is the seat. The pegs that would originally have covered the screws that retain the arms and rear legs are missing. At the rear of the chair where the stretcher joins the back legs there is filler. One of the front to back stretchers has been broken and is loose at the front leg. There is also a break at this point and drilled holes through the front of the leg. In reality these are six good matching chairs.

Lot 689

Two Chippendale style small armchairs, each with drop in seat and raised on cabriole legs terminating claw and ball feet. Each width 33 cm.

Lot 1041

An 19th century mahogany bergere library armchair, with moulded frame and turned front columns with knulled front rail and raised on turned legs terminating in castors. Width 60.5 cm, height to top of back 94.5 cm, seat depth 61 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The chair is structurally sound with no loose joints. There are no losses or significant damage to the chair. We can see no evidence of repairs or significant splits or cracks. The only minor issue is the bottom turning to the right hand foot is missing. There are scuffs and marks around the front feet and less so around the rear legs. The canework is in generally good order with no significant problems. It is probably original to the chair but is serviceable without any significant issues. It does not require re caning. The chair could better be described as Edwardian rather than 19th century. Height to seat excluding cushion 37.5 cm.
