An early 20th century mahogany and upholstered two-seater sofa by Howard & Sons of London - with scroll back and arms, upholstered in the original 'H&S' monogrammed grey ticking, the underside of the sprung seat with exposed curved beech wood spar, raised on square tapered legs with brass castors (not stamped), the underside of the seat with red and white embroidered label 'Howard & Sons Ltd, By Appointment, 25,26,27 Berners St London', further inscribed in ink '2220/4199 E. Dale F. Davey' (LWH 159 x 85.5 x 77.5 cm), structurally sound, the upholstery with stains and a few small holes.* Condition: The frame appears to be very sound structurally, with no evidence of previous restoration. The rear legs may have been reduced in height as they are very short - possibly replaced castors. The legs and castors are secure with no movement and the structure is very sound overall with very little movement. The upholstery is toned, notably to the arms and back, and there are two large ring stains to the back and two smaller to the seat cushions. There are holes worn through the fabric to the front corners of the arms and the right hand corner of the seat front. Old L-shaped stitched repair to the left hand arm and a small patch repair to the right hand end of the seat front.
A Victorian walnut and upholstered two-seater sofa by Howard & Sons of London - with low scroll back and arms, the underside of the sprung seat with exposed curved beech wood spar, raised on turned walnut front legs and swept, square tapered back legs, all with gilt brass castors stamped 'Howard & Sons London', the back left leg stamped '2559 2611 Howard & Sons Ltd, Berners St', in probably the original ticking upholstery. (LWH 150 x 76 x 74 cm), structurally sound, the upholstery a/f.* Condition: The frame appears to be very sound structurally, with no evidence of previous restoration. There is very slight movement to the arms but this is insignificant. The legs and castors are secure with no movement. The upholstery is browned and dirty overall, with notable brown staining to the arms and back. There are two small splits to the fabric to the left hand end of the seat. Overall a very original Howard sofa which is structurally in good condition.
A pair of Anglo-Chinese carved hardwood spoon back armchairs - c.1900, the balloon backs with open rectangular window openings below a substantial upper rail, carved with a crowned, four toed dragon, two smaller long bodied dragons, birds carrying flowers, bats and Shou symbols, within a scale decorated border, the shaped, swept arms carved with further dragons, bats and lion masks, over a later faux-suede upholstered drop-in seat, the seat frame and legs similarly carved, with bamboo borders and feathered lion mask front feet, 60 cm wide, 80.5 cm high.
A Victorian / Edwardian tub back armchair - the buttoned back and arms over a serpentine seat, upholstered in wine red velour, raised on turned, ebonised front legs with castors, 59.5 cm wide, 85 cm high.* Condition: The upholstery is in VG condition. There is slight movement to the legs but the structure is solid overall. One of the wooden seats attaching the rear legs is a later replacement. The other has an old split with glued repair, which is currently secure.
A George II style mahogany chair back settee - late 20th century, in the Chippendale manner, the double chair back with foliate carved top rails and pierced and interlaced vase splats, over a drop-in seat in wine red and antique gold silk damask and swept arms with scroll terminals, raised on three foliate carved cabriole front legs with ball and claw feet, 130 cm long, 102 cm high.
A matched pair of Chinese carved hardwood side chairs, 19th century - the backs carved and pierced with an oval reserve, depicting two deities beneath a pine tree, bordered by two dragons with a flaming pearl amidst prunus and louts flowers, over a drop-in seat within a pierced floral and foliate carved rail, raised on cabriole style legs carved with Buddhistic lion masks, on ball and claw feet, 100cm and 102 cm high, both 50 cm wide. * Condition: The slightly lower chair has an old glued & dowelled repair to a break at the top of the back left leg and base of the back upright (see photos). There are also a few chips to the knops on the spindles at the base of the back on this chair, and some old glue residue around the seat rail joints. Both chairs have one or two tiny chips to the carving. Both seats have earlier upholstery hidden beneath the gold velour – on one, this appears to be red chinoiserie silk. Overall the chairs have a good colour and patina. The slightly taller chair does not have any old repairs and is in good condition overall.
A Georgian-style tan leather and walnut porter's chair - the shaped, hooded back with brass studded leather panels, enclosing a buttoned leather seat back, scroll arms and loose squab cushion, raised on square tapered legs, 85 cm wide, 160 cm high, 87 cm deep.* Condition: In good condition overall. The structure is very solid with no movement. No repairs. The leather is in good order, with no fading and just age related light cracking to the seat cushion and curved edges of the hood, but this is to be expected and is not at all unsightly. There are no rips, tears or splits to the leather. A few minor scuffs and scratches. All buttons present and securely attached.
