Lot 1193

A set of one carver arm and six single William IV mahogany dining chairs, with stuffover seats upholstered in red leather cloth and raised on turned front legs (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The armchair has an old stress crack across the back of the bowed top rail. This is visible but not open and the top rail is solidly fixed to the tops of the arms. The left hand arm is very slightly loose at the bottom joint but not significantly. The back rail and rear legs are in good order. The front legs are in good order also with no breaks and no repairs. They are a little scuffed. The seat webbing and upholstery is serviceable. There is minor evidence of old woodworm in the softer wood underneath the chair but we do not think this is significant. The six single chairs are all structurally very sound and there are no breaks to any of the legs, stiles or back supports. All six bowed top rails are secure but all have been drilled, pegged and filled in the usual place at the top of the stile. There is also evidence of old repairs around this join on most of the chairs. The repair to one chair is fairly crude with three screws to the top of each stile and losses to the left and right of the join. The top is very solid but as stated the repair a little crude. All of the seats are in good order. All chairs have minor traces of old woodworm in the softwood underneath none of which appears to be active.

The front arms and legs are in good condition and undamaged. The castors are original. The front rail is in good condition as is the carving. The rear legs are original and in good order as are the castors. The upholstery is also in serviceable condition. There is some rubbing to the material on the tops of the deep buttoning and one button top on the top of the right hand arm is actually missing. The stuffover seat is serviceable and the springs seem to be reasonably effective and not poking out through the bottom of the base. Some of the braiding is a little loose in places but it is all present.

A Queen Anne style walnut stool, of shaped outline, raised on cabriole legs terminating in claw and ball feet. Width 52 cm. CONDITION REPORT: Three of the legs are in good order with no damage, repairs or restoration. They are structurally sound and not lose at the joints. The fourth leg has been broken around the corner block (the half round section above the knee). The repair is not very good and could be improved upon. A repair would be relatively easy. There is no evidence of any woodworm. The seat is badly stained and the upholstery poor. There is horse hair underneath the pad.

Lot 1082

A pair of Victorian mahogany hall chairs. CONDITION REPORT: Both chair backs are in generally good condition with no losses. They are secure and not loose at the back rail. One chair has two cracks right across the seat and there is a pegged repair on the rear left hand leg. There is a split at the top outside edge of the right hand rear leg. Fronts legs are solid and in generally good order but a little worn at the tips. There are the usual scuffs, scratches and minor losses around the front edge of the seat. Chair two has no significant damage to the seat area. There are losses to the front seat edge. Front legs are slightly loose at the joints. The rear legs are in good order.

Lot 1159

A Victorian walnut armchair, with deep buttoned back, upholstered arms. stuffover seat and raised on front cabriole legs terminating in castors (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: Generally in good condition. The moulded showframe around the upholstered back is in good condition both back and front. The joints at the arms and end scrolls are all slightly open and there is a small amount of movement in these areas. It is not significant in our opinion. The front arms and legs are in good order as is the front rail. The castors are original. The rear left hand leg has an old break and repair and the leg is slightly loose at the top joint. The castor wheel is missing. The right hand rear leg is slightly loose in the joint and again the castor wheel is missing. The braiding is all present but loose around the back and the left hand arm. The upholstery is serviceable. There is one small repair on the seat and the arms are a little dirty but as stated serviceable.

Lot 1133

A Georgian oak longcase clock, with two-train striking movement by William Kipling, London, with ship automaton to arch. Height 204 c (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The clock case is generally a little tired. The hood is all present and the glass undamaged. The gilt capitals have been repainted and the general feel to the finish is a little tired. The trunk door is currently locked and we do not have a key. The door is not warped. There is a small repair to the top left hand corner. There is a further small repair to the left hand side of the lock. The lock has probably been forced at some point. The sides of the case are not warped but there are some old stress fractures, scuffs and marks. The moulding below the door is all intact. The base panels have some stress fractures particularly to the front. The plinth moulding may not be original but has certainly been on the clock for a very long time and is in keeping. We have two weights and the pendulum and when weight is applied to the movement it does appear to tick and strike. We have however not had the clock running for any significant length of time. The movement is a little dirty but looks to have been cleaned in fairly recent times. The dial itself is in good order as is the silvering. The ship automaton seems to operate as it should. The seat board is old and appears to be original. The mask around the dial fits at the bottom and sides but there is a gap around the arch at the top. This could simply be settlement but may indicate a marriage. The ship automaton could possibly be a later addition to what was originally a square dial clock as there are two visible pins where the arch is attached to the square dial.We have just noticed that the left hand rear quarter round pillar at the back of the case is missing. The right hand rear quarter round corner pillar has evidence of old woodworm in the soft wood at the bottom.

Lot 1212

Lot 1084

An antique oak child's chair, with rush seat and with turned and carved frame.

Lot 1027

A Georgian mahogany Chippendale style open armchair, with upholstered seat and raised on moulded legs.

Lot 1081

A set of six Regency mahogany dining chairs, each with bowed top rail, shaped stiles, carved back rail, drop in seat and raised on sabre type front legs. CONDITION REPORT: All of the chairs have firm and solid top rails. They have all however been strengthened which is evidenced by circular dowels at the top of each stile. The stiles, carved bottom rail and rear legs are all in good condition with no damage, no repairs or breaks. Three of the six chairs are loose at the rear joints where the back of the chair joins the side rails. These joints are quite substantial and the repairs should be relatively straight forward. All side rails have thick applied veneer which is in generally good condition with only the odd minor stress fracture and the usual marks and scuffs. All front legs are solid and structurally sound. There are some minor losses to the thick bode veneering on the front of two of the chair front rails. There is no evidence of any woodworm. One seat panel has a broken rear corner. All others are serviceable but the webbing and material are very tired.

Lot 1029

A Victorian walnut open armchair, with exposed moulded showframe, upholstered back, arms and seat and raised on front cabriole legs terminating in castors (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The chair is structurally very sound with no loose joints. The moulded showframe around the deep buttoned back is all in good order and only a little dirty in the carved sections. There are some marks to the showframe around the braiding and it looks as if the piece may have been studded at some point where the braiding now is. There is one old nail head visible at the right hand bottom section of the arch just above the braiding. The front arm and leg are in good condition with only minor surface scuffs to the proud parts of the carving. The castor is original. There are scuffs again to the showframe along the front by the braiding possibly indicating studding. The left hand arm is in generally good order although there is a loss to the carving on the front left hand section of the leg and a further loss just to the left of the seat pad. The leg and the scroll have not been broken and the castor is original. The rear legs are in good order with only minor old surface scuffs and scratches as one would expect. The castors are original. The upholstery is in generally good condition with no staining or discolouration. There are no tears. The braiding is generally in good condition all round.

Lot 1136

A Victorian corner chair, stuffover in blue velvet type material and raised on turned legs with stretchers and brass castors. CONDITION REPORT: All castors are original and solid. The front castor has three later retaining screws. The cross stretchers are in good order. The rear leg has an old stress fracture across the top of the square block onto which the turned leg sits. There is also a crack across the top turning. This is not loose. The two side legs are in good order with only minor scratches and scuffs. The front leg has an old crack across the corner of the top square block and also around the top turning this is however solid and there is no movement. The chair is not loose at any of the joints. The velvet upholstery is tired and a little faded and worn but is serviceable. The webbing under the seat is not visible but is probably a little slack.

Lot 1333

A pair of Victorian walnut salon chairs, ladies and gentleman's, each with exposed moulded showframe, deep buttoned back, stuffover seat and upholstered in green velvet type material and raised on front cabriole legs terminating in castors (see illustration).

Lot 1145

A late 19th/early 20th century carved oak settle, with lion mask arm terminals, box seat and raised on a plinth base. Width 134 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The settle may have had a further pediment to the rear. There are three holes indicating that this may have been the case. The condition is generally good. The top moulded edge is in good condition as is the frieze. The centre carved panel is in generally good order. The left and right hand carved panels have rubbing to the proud parts of the mask particularly on the eyebrows and nose. The arms are generally sound and there is no significant damage to the carvings. The front paw beneath each arm is separated from the lion leg just below the jaw. This is a natural join in the timber which has appeared through shrinkage. The hinges to the lid are in good condition. The interior of the piece is dirty. The carving around the seat is in good order with only minor scuffs in places. The same comments apply to the figures to left and right which are all rubbed on the elbows, nose and eyebrows, etc. The carvings to the front panels are in good order and simply very dusty. The plinth base is in generally good condition with scratches and scuffs as one would expect. The rear panels are original. There is no evidence of woodworm.

Lot 1028

A Victorian rosewood gentleman's armchair, with exposed moulded showframe, deep buttoned back and stuffover seat and raised on cabriole legs terminating in castors (see illustration).

Lot 1243

A Queen Anne style mahogany stool, with stuffover top and foliate carved cabriole legs terminating in claw and ball feet. Width 51 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The stool is structurally very sound with no lose joints. There are the usual scuffs around the claw feet but no real issues to the frame. The upholstery is poor. The webbing seems to be damaged and the seat sagging. Whilst there is no damage to the outer material there is certainly a problem with the webbing and supports underneath. We cannot tell whether this is horse hair filled. There is no evidence of any woodworm.

Lot 1022

A set of four French rush seated dining chairs, each with cushion seat pad and raised on front sabre legs.

Lot 1025

A late Victorian mahogany armchair, with carved bowed top rail, lattice back and upholstered seat, with moulded showframe beneath and raised on short turned and splayed feet with metal caps (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The chair is generally structurally very sound. The top rail is in good order. The spindles are all present with no losses. There is however one small break across one of the turned sections between the bobbins which requires a straight forward glue repair. There is also half of one of the larger balls missing when the chair is viewed from the back. There are no repairs to the legs or the remainder of the frame. There are numerous old scuffs and scratches to the showframe but no significant issues. The springs in the seat appear to be operating as they should and the upholstery is not torn or damaged it is however a little discoloured and dirty.

Lot 1154

A broad arm Windsor armchair, with pierced splat back, shaped seat, turned legs and stretchers (see illustration).

Lot 1300

A set of four Regency dining chairs, stamped "Wilkinson, Ludgate Hill", each with reeded bar back, swags, conforming Wellington seats and raised on sabre legs. Illustrated in "Dictionary of English Furniture Makers 1660-1840" by Geoffrey Beard & Christopher Gilbert (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: These chairs are in generally extremely good condition. They have a good original colour. All chairs are sturdy with no loose joints. The chairs should have turned roundels at the top of each stile. These are completely missing on two of the chairs. One chair has three missing. The chairs do not appear to have any restoration. The only damage that we can see is across the front edge of one knee where there has been an old break. The repair is however very good and barely visible. The seat covers are a little discoloured in places but generally in good order.

Lot 1392

An Edwardian inlaid rosewood settee, with deep buttoned back and seat, with urn and foliate splat back and raised on tapered legs of square section terminating in brass capped castors. Width 140 cm (see illustration).

Lot 1196

A Victorian walnut framed open armchair, with exposed carved showframe and raised on front cabriole legs terminating in castors. CONDITION REPORT: Generally good condition. The exposed showframe around the deep buttoned back is in good order with no damage or losses to either front or back. The join between the right hand arm and the back frame is open and there is movement here. The same applies to the left hand arm but the movement and gap is less significant. The front arms and legs are in good order with original castors. The front rail is in good condition. The rear legs are undamaged and have original castors. They are not loose in the mounts. The upholstery is in serviceable condition and there is no significant staining or discolouration to the material. The braiding is all present but a little loose in places. There is one very small tear to the material at the rear right hand corner of the seat at the corner of the bottom scroll of the back rail. This is about 1 cm in length and in our opinion not particularly significant. We can see no evidence of any woodworm.

Lot 1090

A Victorian style cast iron garden bench, small form, with lattice back and pierced seat. Width 97 cm (see illustration).

Lot 1023

A George III mahogany Chippendale style splat back armchair, with yoke shaped top rail, moulded and shaped arms, the seat upholstered in brown leather and raised on legs of square section. CONDITION REPORT: The chair is structurally sound. The top rail is in good order. The centre splat is in generally good condition with only a very small loss to the bottom right hand corner where it joins the back rail of the chair. The left hand arm is in good order, the right hand arm has a stress fracture in the timber where it joins the stile but there is no movement. The rear legs are in good condition as are the stretchers. The front legs are in good order. The seat looks to have been fairly recently re-upholstered in leather. There are a number of old scratches and scuffs on the chair but no significant issues.

Lot 1238

A Regency/William IV mahogany framed stool, of Klismos shape and with turned stretcher and a Victorian stool raised on cabriole legs. Largest width 60 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The upholstered top of the Klismos type stool is in very poor condition. There are numerous losses and perished areas. The top edge of the frame is in good condition. The legs to one side are in good condition and the joints are generally firm. The opposing side has issues. The left hand leg has been broken into three pieces and crudely repaired. The repair is reasonably effective but does not look good. There is also a dowel through the centre of the lowest point of the cradle holding together the original join of the left and right leg. There is slight movement here. The centre stretcher is in good order. There is minor evidence of woodworm which appears long gone to the interior wooden frame but not the rosewood. The webbing to the underside of the seat pad is all intact but showing signs of age. The cabriole legged stool has a very worn stuffover top. There are numerous repairs, losses and holes. The frame itself seems structurally sound but the joints are all slightly gaping and there are small losses to the timber between the joints. To one side of the scrolling frame where the frame meets the top of the leg there is a crude glued repair.

Lot 1001

A Georgian mahogany armchair, with three pierced splats, open arms and seat upholstered in yellow foliate patterned material.

Lot 1291

An early 20th century Queen Anne style walnut stool, of shaped outline, with cabriole legs terminating in pad feet. Width 54 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The stool is structurally very sound with no loose joints. There is no evidence of any repairs or any woodworm. There are no losses to the timber. The colour is generally good. The seat cover is beginning to perish. We cannot tell whether there is horse hair underneath the cover or not.

Lot 1150

A 19th century broad arm Windsor armchair, with pierced splat back, shaped seat, turned legs and stretchers (see illustration).

Lot 1102

A 19th century Chinese hardwood settee with carved panelled back. Length 190 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: There is a loss to the carving at the top left hand corner of the left back seat panel. There is a small loss to the centre left section of the second panel. There appears to be a big gap in the top right hand corner but we can see no evidence of any loss of carving here. The third panel has some small losses to the carvings at the bottom left, bottom centre left and top left. The fourth panel seems intact. The carved frieze has a glued repair to the underside of one scroll. There is no loss however. There seems to be a small loss to the right hand bottom corner of the centre section of carving to the right of the squirrel. There is a break in the same area and one or two pieces have been reglued. There are various small losses to the carving in this centre section. There are further small losses to the right hand bottom section of the carving where it joins the leg. The bench is structurally fairly sound but is slightly loose at the joints which do move when the bench is flexed. There are some scuffs and small losses to the rear left hand corner of the back left leg. There are no significant losses or damage to any of the frame work.
