A RARE GEORGE III SILVER AND RED LEATHER DOG BRACE LEASH with steel buckles, inscribed William Wynne Sparrow Red Hill Beaumaris Carnarvon Hunt 1817, 87cm l, by George Lowe I, Chester 1816 Provenance: W W Sparrow served as High Sheriff of Anglesey in 1822 and was five times Mayor of Beaumaris between 1819 and 1832. A kinsman, James Sparrow, was Secretary of the management committee which oversaw the building of the Triumphal Arch on Holyhead pier designed by Thomas Harrison of Chester to commemorate the visit of George IV in 1821 (see lot 71). Redhill House is the seat of the Bulkeley Williams family and was acquired on the bankruptcy of the then Sparrow occupier, around 1850. George Lowe I (1768-1841) registered his mark at the Chester Assay Office in 1791, shortly after having done so in London. He enjoyed a long connection with the Bateman family of silversmiths for whom he acted as their agent in Chester. He served as Warden and for a time Assay Master at Chester and catered to an illustrious local clientele. ++A rare and interesting object complete and in fine condition with some natural fraying and wear to the leather consistent with the age but acceptable

JOHN RAPHAEL SMITH (1752-1812) PORTRAIT OF MISS LOUISA GRESLEY pastel, oval, 25 x 21.5cm, giltwood and composition sanded frame with old label on the backboard identifying the sitter The sitter was the sister of Sir Nigel Bowyer Gresley, Bt, Recorder of Lichfield. He also sat to Smith who also engraved in mezzotint the resulting portrait. The Gresley family were long established in South Derbyshire, their principal seat being Drakelow Hall (demolished 1934) near Burton on Trent. The baronetcy was created in 1611 for George Gresley, MP for Newcastle under Lyme and became extinct on the death of the 13th baronet in 1976. ++In good original condition

A WALNUT AND MARQUETRY EIGHT DAY LONGCASE CLOCK, WILLIAM JACKSON, C1700 the brass dial with matted centre, date aperture, ringed winding holes and subsidiary seconds dial, having signed chapter ring and cherub spandrels, five pillar movement, in floral marquetry case with fretted cornice and brass rimmed lentical, weights and pendulum, 216cm h Provenance: Frank Gibbs Rye, CBE (1874-1948), MP for Loughborough 1924-29, Mayor of Westminster 1922-23, Deputy Chairman London County Council 1945-46; thence by descent. The clock was shown in a 1949 photograph of the interior of his home Basing House, Thames Ditton, Surrey. ++The movement very dirty, dust and grime but basically complete. The seat board packed, movement and dial possibly original to the case, case in basically good, unrestored condition with minor losses and veneer splits. No substantial damage and not subject to recent or repolishing
