Filler has been used to help disguise this to the finished/outer side of the rail. Settee is structurally solid overall. Two plugged holes visible to front seat rail. Some fading to timber in places. A SET OF EIGHTEEN WALNUT AND LEATHER UPHOLSTERED DINING CHAIRSIN GEORGE III STYLE, LATE 19TH/EARLY 20TH CENTURYUpholstered with brass studded red Morocco leather, the cabriole legs with carved anthemion, an ivory plaque to one 'JOHN REID & SON, 89, BUCHANAN ST GLASGOW. & 26, SANDGATE, AYR.'each 93cm high, 46cm seat, 56cm wide, 61cm deepFrom 1876-1909 John Reid & Son, in Glasgow and Ayr, was a co-partnership with the Edinburgh firm of carpet warehousemen, cabinet makers, upholsterers and retailers Whytock & Reid.Condition Report: Overall there are marks, scratches, cracks, chips and abrasions consistent with age and use.The red leather has aged to variable colours due to sun, wear, rubbing, stains and marks. Overall the colour in reality is a 'pinker' red than the 'browner' red of the photograph might suggest.The leather is in a 'country house' condition - generally intact, but with the signs of age and wear that give it mellow well-used appearance.There are various repairs generally to the areas where the legs meet the seat rail.There is a missing brass stud and a cut/tear to the leather on the front of one chair; The studs are variably bright brass, antiqued brass and steel coloured.Two chairs have a higher seat and taller back than the other chairs, suggesting that they were possibly not originally with the set, although they look to be similar in date.Blocks to the corners of the seat rails are of a later date.There is some movement to the back and back legs of one chair with the seat joint. AN EARLY LOUIS XVI GREY AND GREEN PAINTED FAUTEUIL CIRCA 1775 With arched padded back, the moulded frame with flowerhead cresting, padded arms, downscrolled supports and upholstered seat on fluted legs 93cm high, 60cm wide, 53cm wideProvenance: Christie's, London, Anonymous sale, 3rd July 1973, Lot 28 (£175). Condition Report: There are marks, scratches, knocks and abrasions consistent with age and use.The paint distressed to reveal the underlying beech in particular to protruding areas such as the flower carved crest and arms, also the legs and feet.There are holes to the underside of the legs, one foot chipped.Some joints have probably been repaired as there are some traces of glue.There are traces of a wash to the paintwork on the back.We are unable to comment on the areas under the upholstery.The upholstery is slightly compressed to the seat area, with some wear to the arms, some depressions to the pile of the fabric and with a ?moth threadbare patch to the front of the seat, some stains.Some evidence of worm.There are holes to the corners inside the seat rails probably from blocks/corner stretchers that have been removed.The underside of the seat rails have holes from previous upholstery tacks.Please see the additional photographs as a visual reference of condition.Condition Report Disclaimer
A GEORGE III MAHOGANY GAINSBOROUGH ARMCHAIR CIRCA 1790With studded green leather upholstery100cm high, 68cm wide, 71cm deep Condition Report: Marks, knocks, scratches and abrasions commensurate with age and use. Some old splits and chips to timber. Slight movement within some areas of the frame but chair is structurally solid overall. Later supporting corner blocks to the backs of the seat rails. Some evidence of old worm to seat rails. The undersides of the feet with vacant holes from where castors once sat. Leather upholstery with some creases, wear, abrasions and scuffs. There is a small tear to one front corner of the seat. In some places adjacent to the brass studs there are old tack holes to the timber from where the previous upholstery sat. A GEORGE III GILTWOOD OPEN ARMCHAIR IN THE MANNER OF THOMAS CHIPPENDALE, CIRCA 1775 92cm high, 66cm wide, 52cm deep overallFor a pair of chairs by Thomas Chippendale of related form and incorporating near identical legs, see Sotheby's, London, 27th September 2012, Lot 135 (£73,250). A set of twelve chairs twelve chairs of this design were supplied by Chippendale for Brocket Hall, Hertfordshire in 1773, see Christopher Gilbert, The Life & Work of Thomas Chippendale, Vol II, Studio Vista/Christie's, 1978, page 109, figure 185.Thomas Chippendale supplied a chair to Harewood House, Yorkshire in 1773 that incorporates foliate roundel carving to the frame that are closely related to those seen on this chair, Christopher Gilbert, The Life & Work of Thomas Chippendale, Vol II, Studio Vista/Christie's, 1978, page 106, figure 178. For a chair supplied by Chippendale for Harewood House in 1772, incorporating upright arm supports related to those on the chair shown here, see Christopher Gilbert, The Life & Work of Thomas Chippendale, Vol II, Studio Vista/Christie's, 1978, page 114, figure 198. Condition Report: Various marks, knocks, scratches and abrasions commensurate with age. Old re-guilding to surface. Various old chips and losses (see images for extent). Old but later metal bracing between back of seat rail and both front legs. Central upright to centre of the back is lacking. Old worm present to the block at the top/back of one rear leg (see image). Two sections of old replacement timber inset into each side of the back (at approx. 10 and 2 o'clock). Section of cresting at the top of back appears to have been detached and glued back into position. Triangular section of timber lacking towards the lower area of the back. Slight movement within frame. The hessian pads with wear loose threads and fraying. Various old tack holes from where previous upholstery sat. Good original surface, Very good depth of colour and patina overall. Old chips and splits. some minor old chips of loss. Some larger old fragments of loss to the outer corners of the front legs. some minor old repairs including very small tacks put in to secure the 'shoe piece) at the base of the back and filler to disguise. The rear seat rail from the reverse has two triangular sections of veneer that are of a lighter tone. These could be coloured better to match/ blend in. They may be old replacements, closely matched old veneer has been used. With the exception of the rear seat rail, the remainder are very well executed replacements. likely 20th century in date The dowel joints securing the arms in position are of a lighter coloured timber than the main elements of the chair. It is difficult to conclude if these are original. They have been in place for a considerable period. The chair is of solid structureThe seat fabric is a later replacement. A SET OF TWELVE CARVED MAHOGANY DINING CHAIRSIN GEORGE III STYLE, 19TH CENTURYTo include a pair of armchairs, each with a tapestry covered drop-in seateach 95.5cm high, 55cm wide, 54cm deep overallCondition Report: There are marks, scratches, cracks, chips, knocks and abrasions consistent with age and use.The drop in seats have woolwork upholstery in various conditions, some loose and with dipping seat centres, others tighter and plumper.The woolwork does not quite extend far enough on all the sides of the canvas so that there are some sections of bare canvas visible. Some of the woolwork is in more of a worn and aged condition than other woolwork seats, with some fading, wear, stains and marks. One chair has a slightly different coloured thread to half the blue ground colour. One drop in seat has upholstery that is not fixed on one edge with the horsehair and cotton wadding coming out.There is some evidence of worm, but with few visible holes.Some fading to the backs of some of the chairs, some of the crest rails have a gap in the joint area; some rubbing to the dark staining revealing an underlying lighter coloured timber.There are some splits to the tops of the leg joints where they join the seat rails.Some repairs overall.Please see the additional photographs as a visual reference of condition.Condition Report Disclaimer
