A George II/III mahogany Chippendale period ribbon back side chair with guilloche pieced and carved back splat above a drop-in seat, supported on acanthus carved cabriole supports with claw and ball feet, 61 cm wide x 64 cm deep x 98 overall height, 47 cm height to the seat. Together with an 18th-century mahogany open armchair and another 18th-century mahogany side chair.Qty: 3The cabriole-legged chairThe frame is tight and the splat is free from cracks and losses and of good colour and patina. The back seat rail below the splat is of slightly differing colour and is one piece rather than the more usual back rail and splat shoe set-up. On turning this chair over the back rail has had some rather subtle "False Tennon" repairs, the inner face of one of the side seat rails has signs of saw chatter this is not replicated on the other rails. The earpiece brackets or returns at the top of the cabriole legs have been refixed with nails (but not rose heads)One of these side earpieces is of different colour and could be a replacement. The drop-in seat is fully upholstered with tensioned webs that can be felt through the underside dust cover, these webs are most likely replacements and so are still taught and the seat is sag-free because the upholstery frame is enclosed I can not vouch for the originality of the upholstery frame. The chair does not suffer from woodworm being true mahogany and I can't see any signs of frass from the seat frame although it is fully enclosed.I think this chair has been restored/ repaired at some point in the past but is basically a period chair. The armchair has been repared to the arms and they are now loose again and will require work, the cresting rail has some damage as it meets the back upright on the right-hand side. The single chair has a rather clumsy repair to the back leg, this could be made good but worth mentionBoth of these chairs are honest but have had poor repairs that could be rectified.
