A LATE GEORGE III AND LATER SENTIMENTAL LOCKET NECKLACE The belcher link chain necklace with lobster claw clasp suspending nine lockets containing a lock of hair, the reverse with the following inscriptions Eliz.b Anne West, born the 7 June 1804; James Shuttleworth West, born 10 Aug 1805; James Banks West, born the 15. of March 1807; Rob.t Shuttleworth West, born 1st Jan 1809; Sophia Jane West, born 26 March 1810; Miriam Caroline West 19. June 1811; Helen Agnes West, Born dec 10. 1812; Charles Edward West Born 27 July 1815; Anna Maria West Born 20th July 1822 Size/dimensions: lockets 1.1cm diameter, 42.5cm long Gross weight: 19.6 grams These pendant lockets have the names of the West family, the 11 children of James WEST Esq. (1750-1829) and his wife Emma Shuttleworth (1778 -1834), although there are no lockets for two of their children, Mary Emma and Desagulius, on the chain. Some of the children have the middle name Shuttleworth after their mother Emma, whose family originate from Gawthorpe Hall, Lancashire. Condition Report: The Shuttleworth family seat at Gawthorpe Hall was visited in 1850 by the novelist Charlotte Brontë, steying with Sir James and Lady Kay-Shuttleworth. She described Gawthorpe Hall as '...grey, stately and picturesque, a model of old English architecture.' It is now in the care of the National Trust Condition Report Disclaimer
