During the First World War his Sopwith Aviation Company, based at Brooklands, produced more than 18,000 aircraft for the allied forces, including nearly 6,000 Sopwith Camel single-seat fighters. * Vickers Fighter F.B.5. A fine WWI silver presentation model of the Vickers Fighter "Gunbus" by Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company, London 1916, a beautifully handcrafted piece with precision detail, the cockpit mounted with a Lewis machine, approximately 39 cm long x 30.5 cm wingspan x 12.5 cm high, mounted on an ebonised plinth with a silver plaque engraved 'Vickers Fighter F.B.5.', the overall height including plinth 27.5 cm, overall weight 38oz together with two related photographs plus a copied letter of provenance QTY: (1)NOTE:Provenance: Percy Maxwell-Muller, General Manager for Vickers Aircraft during WWI and then by family descent. The Vickers FB5 also referred to as the “Gunbus” was a WWI British two-seat military bi-plane. It was armed with a single .303 in Lewis gun operated by the observer in the front of the nacelle. The FB5 was the world's first operational fighter aircraft being the first aircraft purpose-built for air-to-air combat. The war office ordered the new Gunbus from Vickers in Brooklands for the Royal Flying Corps in 1915.This superb handmade solid silver model is remarkable both in the fact it was made during the First World War with such attention to detail but also that it was specifically commissioned by Vickers from the Goldsmiths and Silversmiths Company in London as a gift to the Works Manager of Vickers Brooklands at this time Mr Percy Maxwell Muller, no doubt as recognition for the War office order in 1915. Although records from Goldsmiths no longer exist it is highly likely that this was produced as a “one-off” bespoke order. The Biplane is fully hallmarked and separately marked in 9 locations on the plane including the wheels and rotating propeller.During Maxwell Muller's time as General Manager Vickers also saw their modified Vickers Vimy bomber flown by British Aviators Alcock and Brown make the first non-stop Transatlantic flight in June 1919. It is interesting to note that one of the propellers was given to Maxwell Muller and subsequently was displayed for many years suspended inside the Transatlantic terminal at Heathrow airport. In October 1990 it was donated by the BAA via its former chairman Sir Peter Masefield to Brooklands Museum at Weybridge where it is now motorised and displayed as part of a full-size Vimy wall mural.A letter of authenticity and provenance from the grandson Mr Ian Maxwell Muller is included stating his previous ownership as well as his grandfather’s involvement in 1919 with the first transatlantic flight and his award of an MBE in 1918 for services to the war effort. He retired in 1936.
