A set of six Regency simulated rosewood, brass mounted and inlaid dining chairs by John GeeCirca 1815, each with a curved and dished channelled toprail with stylised foliate incised and rosette carved ends, above a twin addorsed C-scroll splat centred by a tablet, on splayed legs, each chair stamped: 'GEE', three chairs also stamped: 'CH', each approximately: 49cm wide x 55cm deep x 83cm high, (19in wide x 21 1/2in deep x 32 1/2in high) (6)Footnotes:A very similar dining chair, albeit with more brass inlay to those of the present lot, which is stamped: 'J.GEE', appears illustrated in C. Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture, 1700-1840, 1996, Leeds, fig. 385, p. 220. This comparable is one of a set of eight dining chairs of almost identical form to the offered examples.John Gee is listed as chairmaker and turner 1779-c.1824. See Ibid, pp.'s 217-221 for other seat furniture by Gee, some of which is stamped with the same monogram device. The presence of various stamped single initials are thought to denote particular journeymen in the workshop.Gee entered into partnership with Benjamin Compton 'Turner in Ordinary to George III' in 1779 and by 1787 he was himself sworn in as a 'turner' jointly with his partner Thomas Aycliffe, who descended from a family of Royal turners. Gee was recorded from 1799 at 49 Wardour Street, Soho. Lane (Theodore) Theatrical Pleasures, the set of six, engravings with full original hand-colouring, on cream wove paper with full margins, without watermarks, each platemark approx. 275 x 225 mm (10 3/4 x 8 3/4 in), plate 1 with some faint stains, otherwise minor surface dirt, "Newton" bookplate to front pastedown, polished calf, gilt, by Riviere & Son, spine split, rubbed and scuffed corners with stains to upper cover, [Bobins 869], 4to, published by the artist, [circa 1820-1828].⁂ Including: "Crowding to the Pit"; "Contending for a Seat"; "Snug in the Gallery"; "Taken Places Occupied"; "Feasting in the Saloon"; "Turning out half satisfied".
Ferneley (John) Count Sandor's Exploits in Leicestershire, the set of 10 fine hand-coloured aquatint plates heightened with gum arabic on india paper by Edward Duncan after Ferneley, neatly tipped into album, later red half morocco, gilt, gilt-lettered red morocco label to upper cover, [Bobins 775; Siltzer 121], oblong folio, R.Ackermann Junior, 1833⁂ A bright and clean example of this rare set. Count Sandor was a Hungarian nobleman who spent a season at Melton Mowbray on a visit to Lord Alvanley. His daring horsemanship and mishaps were the subject of much merriment over the Melton dinner tables at the time and long afterwards. The prints are based on ten oil paintings which the Count commissioned from Ferneley and took back to his seat at Bais in Hungary.
