VICTORIAN SILVER GILT PEDESTAL CUP, by J.V.N/M, London 1852, of tapering circular form, the body embossed with flowerheads and foliage, on a graduated circular foot, the centre engraved with a crest and a presentation inscription "Presented to Lieutenant Colonel Sidney North M.P. by Col. The Earl of Wilton GCII Lieutenant Colonel Lothian Dixon RKSF and the Offices of the Queens Own LTM as a mark of their esteem and regard on his retirement from the Rett. 8th August 1855", 33cm high (c.29.5oz) John Sidney North (1804-1894) (known as John Doyle until 1838) was a Member of Parliament for 33 years. At the 1852 General Election North was returned to Parliament as one of three members for Oxfordshire, the seat he held until the constituency was divided at the 1885 General Election. In 1886 he was sworn of the Privy Council. He was also a Colonel in the British Army.
