ROBERT THOMPSON OF KILBURNA RARE MOUSEMAN ADZED OAK MONKS CHAIR, 1930, the horse-shoe shaped seat rail with the carved head of a monk and a rosette, above a splat carved with the Horlick's family coat of arms above the motto LABORE ET SCIENTIA (by work and by knowledge), to the sides Tudor rose carved splats, woven leather drop-in seat, raised on faceted legs joined by an X-form stretcher, carved mouse signature to a front leg, Horlicks and GlaxoSmithKline asset register numbers to the underside.Provenance: The Horlicks Collection. Recorded in the Robert Thompson ledger, 1930, Messrs Horlick, Slough, Monks Chair with coat of arms, £6 each.Note: The Horlick family are famous for creating and owning the famous malted drink "Horlicks" manufactured at their large factory in Slough, which was recently closed following the sale of the business to GlaxoSmithKline. The Robert Thompson ledgers indicate that the family commissioned a significant number of pieces from 1930 through to 1939 to furnish their boardroom and other offices.
