Joseph Maria Olbrich (1867-1908), a rare pair of mahogany armchairs, each with tapering back of slender spindles above an upholstered panel seat enclosed by open arms on tapering legs linked by stretchers 110 x 57½cm (43 x 22in) Literature: Müller, Dorothee 'Klassiker des Modernen Möbeldesign', Munich, 1980, pl. 36 for illustrations of similar chairs. Other Notes: Joseph Maria Olbrich was co-founder of the Vienna Succession movement with, amongst others, Gustav Klimt. He trained as an architect in Vienna, but was also a successful furniture designer. His approach - reflected in the Succession movement - was to explore the possibilities of art outside the confines of academic tradition. The motto of the movement, "To every art its age; to every art its freedom" can be seen in the design of these chairs – the line and style breaking away from the past but now, some 100 years later, a perfect example of Secessionist design, and highly collectable. See Lot 319, Christies New York sale 15th December 2010 for similar chair, which sold for US$5,000.
