1922 Hillman 11 HPRegistration number NK4362Chassis No. 426 Engine No. 104/H/426. Like many owners of early car companies in the UK, William Hillman had made his fortune making bicycles. When he wanted to move into car manufacturing he went into partnership with a young Breton engineer called Louis Coatalen who was the then Chief Engineer at Humber. The Company Hillman-Coatalen was formed in 1907 and the first cars had large engines of 6.4 and 9.6 litre engines. A smaller 2.7 litre joined the range in 1908. The partnership was dissolved in 1909 when Coatalen moved to Sunbeam and the Company was then known just as the Hillman Motor Car Company. The 12/15 design was continued until 1913 when A J Dawson who overhauled it and Hillman embarked on a single model policy, the 9 HP. The Nine horsepower sold reasonably well and the engine size increased to 1593 cc, 10 HP. When Dawson left Hillman to start his own Company John Black, Hillman’s son-in-law, took over where Dawson left off. The design continued unchanged, apart from the addition of electric lighting, until the model was discontinued in 1925.This particular car is believed to be one of only two of this model known to The Hillman Register. The two-seat body with dickey seat is attractively presented in red with black wings and the car has been restored in the past. The interior trim is leather and in good condition. The bodywork was constructed by the renowned firm Vanden Plas. The car is fitted with a full complement of brass Lucas lamps and, as from new, retains its Scott dynamotor and magneto ignition. There is a small history file going back a number of years. Included in this is correspondence between the owner in 1964 and the National Motor Museum, articles from The Autocar, a copy of a page on The 1921 Hillman Ten by Michael Sedgwick, technical specifications and a copy of a wiring diagram. Interestingly there is also a letter on file from Hillman Motor Car Co Ltd dated 1961 when the then owner was about to embark on a restoration and some photos taken in the 1960’s prior to this restoration. Well prepared and beautifully presented, this remarkable 'stepfront' racer has been campaigned extensively for many seasons with much success. Released in September 1963 at Alfa's newly opened Arese plant, later displayed at the Frankfurt Motor Show in the same month, the Giulia Sprint GT was the first Giulia sport model in the Tipo 105 line-up. The styling was entrusted to the then 22-year-old Giorgetto Giugiaro, but with two Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta Special Bertone’s and Alfa Romeo’s 2000 and 2600 Sprints already behind him, it’s easy to see that the car's looks were in capable hands and the 105 is regarded as one of his finest commercial efforts. The balance of glass and metal, the influence of the front and rear screens on the shape of the cabin and the flat grille with incorporated headlamps were all considered ground-breaking styling features of the era and the model became known as the Scalino or 'Stepfront' due to the bonnet sitting one centimetre above the nose of the car to allow for improved cooling. This venerable 'stepfront' Giulia Sprint GT racer has been very successful in both major disciplines of motorsport over many years. The first chapter of its competition life began when it became the outright winner of the HRCR's Safety Devices Historic Rally Challenge for pre-1967 classics which combined both road and special stage disciplines. It was restored by Nigel Shapland and spent the rest of the 1990s rallying in the hands of Paul Merryweather and Jeremy Lewis.Purchased by our vendor in 2005, the second chapter of its motorsport career saw it prepared for circuit racing by renowned specialists, GTS Motorsport. It was built to full FIA specification (the papers now need renewing) with a 1,600cc race engine to Appendix K specification, a Gripper differential, GKN Driveline race prop-shaft, an 80-litre alloy foam-filled fuel tank, Safety Devices roll cage, full stainless exhaust system by Alfaholics and a lightweight battery and starter motor. The safety equipment includes a Sparco Pro 200 seat, Lifeline Zero 360 Electric Extinguisher and TRS Belts. This handsome 'stepfront' has been campaigned by our vendor for over 16 seasons, taking on the best events and racing extensively in the UK, Europe and the USA, accumulating many class wins. It has competed in the Masters Series/U2TC/HSCC/HRDC/CSCC/Silverstone Festival (formerly the Silverstone Classic)/Alfa Revival Cup/Donington Historic Festival/Coppa Intereuropa Monza (three times), Daytona Rolex Championship and is very well known at both the Goodwood Revival and Members Meets, where it has been shared with such luminaries as Arturo Merzario, David Leslie and Tom Shephard. Full race preparation, rebuilds and race support were provided by experts GTS Motorsport. The history file includes some original registration documents, the current V5C, many previous MOTs, its RAC Historic Rally Vehicle papers, the RAC Competition Log Book and the expired FIA Historic Papers. A lot of set-up data will be available to the new owner.Offered at a very attractive estimate, this well travelled little Alfa is ready for the next chapter of its competition life and we can't think of another so well qualified and with such a distinguished motorsport history.Specification Make: ALFA ROMEO Model: GIULIA SPRINT GT Year: 1964 Chassis Number: AB51528 Registration Number: FUR 448B Transmission: Manual Engine Number: 0050206503 Drive Side: Right-hand Drive Make: RHDClick here for more details and images
A road-registered homage to the Audi Quattro campaigned by the renowned rally driver, Michèle Mouton. Trailered to and from events from our vendor's Private Collection. Michèle Mouton is perhaps most famous for competing in the World Rally Championship for the Audi factory team, taking took four victories and finishing runner-up in the Drivers' World Championship in 1982. Mouton made her debut in rallying as a co-driver but quickly moved to the driver's seat, steering an Alpine-Renault A110 in national rallies. In 1975, she competed in circuit racing and won the 2-litre prototype class in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. After being signed by Fiat France for 1977, Mouton finished runner-up to Bernard Darniche in the European Rally Championship. She went on to win the 1978 Tour de France Automobile and recorded consistent results in her home events in the WRC; the Tour de Corse and the Monte Carlo Rally. For 1981, Audi Sport signed Mouton to partner Hannu Mikkola and, in her first year with the Audi Quattro, she took a surprise victory at the Rallye San Remo. In the 1982 World Rally season, Mouton finished a close second overall to Walter Röhrl, after wins in Portugal, Brazil and Greece, and helped Audi to its first manufacturers' title. Our vendor, a huge fan of Mme. Mouton back in the day, purchased this special car in 2016 where it joined a Collection of period race and rally cars. First registered in the UK on 21st October 1982, the car retains its UK V5C and, although road-registered, our vendor informs us that some enhancements would be required to enjoy the car on the road with confidence. Naturally MOT exempt, our vendor would recommend the buyer seek professional advice before committing the car to the open road.Trailered to various shows and often lent to friends for business promotional purposes, this rather fine re-creation would make an ideal show car and an interesting addition to any Collection. Regretfully offered to auction to fulfil the need to slim down his Collection due to advancing years, this car has great potential.Specification Make: AUDI Model: QUATTRO Year: 1982 Chassis Number: 85DA900654 Registration Number: XMS 999Y Transmission: Manual Drive Side: Right-hand Drive Make: RHD Interior Colour: BlackClick here for more details and images
