A GEORGE I WALNUT WING ARMCHAIR CIRCA 1725 With needlework upholstery 117cm high, 79cm wide, 65cm deep overall Condition Report: There are scratches, marks, knocks, cracks and abrasions consistent with age and use.There are losses, observations and restorations including: the wool needlework is of some age and has been re-used and repaired in relatively recent re-upholstery combined with later pale woven fabric piping and with a muted corn coloured linen fabric for the sides and back of the chair and the sides and underside of the seat cushion; the woolwork design overshoots the back and seat of the chair, suggesting that it was not originally intended for upholstery on this chair; some areas of woolwork have been repaired, patched and extended with later stitchwork; there is a hole in the needlework at a join in the curve of the wing side where it meets the arm; the underside of the chair has later corner blocks to the seat rails and is missing an earlier cross stretcher; there is evidence of worm including to the seat rails and legs; the seat rails have holes from previous upholstery tacks; the close nail upholstered main frame of the chair has not been inspected; some of the carved whirls to the top of the legs are later replacements; there are later metal bosses to the underside of the pad feet.Please see the additional photographs as a visual reference of condition. A REGENCY GILTWOOD X-FRAME WINDOW SEAT IN THE MANNER OF THOMAS HOPE, CIRCA 1815 69cm high, 75cm wide, 41cm deep overall Condition Report: Marks, knocks, scratches and abrasions commensurate with age and use. Surface has been re-gilded at some point.The gilt with the expected wear, chips and some losses - see images for details. Seat is slightly discoloured and has some marks and 'pulls'. A GEORGE II WALNUT WING ARMCHAIR CIRCA 1740 113cm high, 81cm wide, 85cm deep Provenance: Property of Harry Taft Hayward (1868 - 1930) and Edith Wires (1872 - 1962) Skyring House, Worthing, and thence by descentHarry Taft Hayward (1868 - 1930) - cousin to William Howard Taft, 27th president of the United States - and Edith Wires (1872 - 1962) were members of the Boston elite. Their two daughters, Mary Elizabeth Hayward (1906-1976) and Harriet Taft Hayward (1907-1968), lived at Oakwald, Franklin, Massachusetts and were both painted by the artist Sir John Lavery (1856 - 1941); see Christie's, The Scottish Sale at The Assembly Rooms, Edinburgh, 6975, 28th October 2004, Lot 152. Condition Report: The cushion in one of the photographs online is sold with this lot. It is woolwork with a wool tasselled border and a damask fabric back - there are signs of moth damage.Overall there are some scratches, marks, knocks, cracks, abrasions and minor repairs consistent with age and use.Overall the outer and inner upholstery is extensively worn. The frame under the upholstery has not been inspected.The feet have vacant holes to the undersides from previous casters and there are some chips and cracks.There is some old worm.There is some dark staining and some later blocks and ears and the seat frames have holes from previous upholstery tacks.The frame is slightly loose jointed. Condition Report: Overall there are some scratches, marks, knocks, cracks, abrasions and minor repairs consistent with age and use.The ochre semi-tufted and natural colour woven fabric showing few signs of wear.Some chips and marks from previous upholstery tacks to the outer and inner frame.The left arm is cracked and repaired around the flowerhead area where the arm meets the arm support.The front legs carved with equal quality to the front and the back with a curled twist of hair to the back of the hairy paw foot.The feet are recessed with brass and leather casters. A Howard and Sons style arm chair, some staining to the upholstery, 89cm H x 83cm W AFAs catalogued staining to the upholstery around the skirt and to the back, the legs modern, the front turned, chipped and with damage, no labels, as catalogued Howard & Sons style. The frame appears in good condiiton, it is comfortable and stable, the seat cushion isnt very firm. It is a modern armchair.
Matched set of six late Georgian mahogany dining chairs, bar backs above X stretchers, upholstered seats on turned legs, including two elbow chairs, width 51cm, height 85cm, and four single chairs.Qty: 6Condition report:All the chairs have had some form of repair over time - repaired top rails, arms, repairs to the cross backs, etc. As they presently are they are all sound in frame, and the seat upholstery is fine, lacking a little stuffing and with some spot staining, but a little cleaning, and the set would be perfectly usable on a frequent basis. One of the armchairs has had the right arm repaired by a screw-head to the front of the arm. The screw-head could be disguised a little with a filler but nothing too drastic. The other armchair does have a little movement in the arms.

The back and top of the single armchair has quite heavy colour fading. The side of the right arm of the three-seat sofa also has colour fading (through sunlight). The rest of the three-seat sofa and the entire two-seat sofa colours are fairly even and true. The cushions retain good support. No strong odours.
