GERRIT RIETTVELD (Utrecht, 1988- 1964)."Zig-zag chair", design 1934.Ash wood. Edition 2000.Slight marks of use.Measurements: 74,5 x 30 x 39 cm.This chair replicates the design of the "Zig-Zag Chair", designed by Gerrit Rietveld (1888-1964), a perfect expression of the "De Stijl" movement, created in 1934 and currently present in outstanding design collections all over the world, such as the MoMA in New York. The original model, created for the Schroeder house in Utrecht (owned by Rietveld), can be interpreted as a response to the economic recession of the time, due to the simplicity of its design and the use of a single material, wood. In fact, the "Zig-Zag" is based on four elements joined by a simple assembly system, based on triangular joints that give rigidity to the structure. At the same time, it has a visual simplicity that suggests a complex construction process. Unlike the "Zig-Zag", this "Z" chair is made from ash wood rather than cherry, but it maintains the essence of a design that stands out from any conventional image; it is a chair without legs, made up solely of flat surfaces, and can be used as a seat but also as a support table. In addition, it is a stackable piece of furniture that takes up very little space.

Lot 104

ARNE JACOBSEN (Denmark, 1902 - 1971) for FRITZ HANSEN."Ant Chair", design 1951.Moulded plywood with dark oak veneer. Chromed steel base.Features Fritz Hauser label. Edition 2006.It has slight wear marks and a small scratch on the seat.Measurements: 78 x 42 x 39 cm.The Ant chair, hormiga in Spanish, was designed in 1951 by Arne Jacobsen for use in the dining room of the Danish pharmaceutical company Novo Industries. It received its name because of its approximate resemblance to the outline of an ant with its head raised.Architect and designer, Arne Jacobsen (Denmark, 1902 - 1971) studied for four years at the Copenhagen School of Construction, then entered the Faculty of Architecture at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. His architectural highlights include St. Catherine's College in Oxford, the SAS Hotel in Copenhagen, the headquarters of the National Bank of Denmark in Copenhagen, and the Royal Danish Embassy in London. As a designer, he has created furniture that has become classics, including the "Ant" chair (1951) and the "Swan" and "Egg" chairs designed for the SAS Hotel. He is also known for his 1955 model 3107 chair, also known as "Chair number 7", of which more than five million were sold, starring alongside Christine Keeler in Lewis Morley's iconic portrait. His other contribution to popular culture in the media is his designer cutlery, with spoons for both hands, which were chosen for the film "2001: A Space Odyssey" for their futuristic look. The key to the success of Jacobsen's work lies in its elegant and essential design, and it can now be found in collections such as the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and the MoMA in New York, among many others. The Danish firm Fritz Hansen, founded in 1872, manufactures original, unique, functional and innovative contemporary design furniture. It manufactures its products in its facilities in the north of Copenhagen, making each piece in close cooperation with internationally renowned designers and architects. THE GLADSTONE TABLE: A VICTORIAN SPECIMEN MARBLE PEDESTAL TABLEProbably attributable to John Woodley, Royal Marble Works of St Marychurch, Torquay, DevonThe circular top centred by stalactite flowstone of the Kents Cavern type and eight radially arranged and unusually large plaquettes of various Devon marbles, with a black marble rim, raised on a veined Petit Tor marble octagonal baluster support and corresponding base, 60cm wide x 60cm deep x 72cm high, (23 1/2in wide x 23 1/2in deep x 28in high)Footnotes:This fascinating 'Patriotic' specimen marble table stands apart from two others from the original set of three at Fasque because it is distinctly likely the central specimen was excavated by the future Prime Minister William Gladstone. It was noted in his diaries that, on 19th September 1832 whilst on a 'gap' and staying with his mother and father in Torquay, he visited 'Kent's Cavern' where he 'spent some hours...in digging and hammering', later complaining that it was already much knocked about and that no good stalactites remained. More significantly, he took home some specimens of stalactite which the following day he spent time 'scrubbing and gumming'. The fact that this table was central in the hall at Fasque alludes to the possibility it was of familial importance, incorporating the work of William Gladstone himself.Provenance: Ex Fasque, Kincardineshire.Christies, The Scottish Seat of the Gladstones, 7th May 2008, lot 174.Literature: 1851 Fasque Inventory under Entrance Hall, 'Marble Table and Stand, £5.0.0'M.R.D Foot(ed), The Gladstone Diaries, pub. Oxford University Press, 1968.Geological Notes: The specimens within the top are; Stromatoporoid (Strom) limestone, Coral bearing marble with branching rugose forms, Grey reef rock, Coral/Strom with with Renalcis 'shadows' (Fossil Petittor), Thamnopora corals from Bradley Wood, Newton Abbott (Featherstone), veined pink/yellow petitor, part dolomitised coral/strom, red laminated reef mud (Petit Tor) and local Pleistocene flowstone. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: TPTP Lot will be moved to an offsite storage location (Cadogan Tate, Auction House Services, 241 Acton Lane, London NW10 7NP, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue.
