The timber appears closer to that which has been known as 'red walnut' . It has a grain associated with walnut but the red colour of mahogany. The cresting rails (top rail of each) is lighter in colour, particularly of one which has previously had some old cracks/ breaks through it (see images) . It seems possible that the timber was selected to use in that position. Some small nails have been used to secure elements such as the repair of one top rail of one chair and the 'shoe' pieces at the base of each back splat (see images) Some old worm damage (see images) none weakens the overall structure of the element it affects. The seat rails underlying the upholstery are not visible so we cannot guarantee their originality at this stage.
