Lot 255

Original vintage World War Two poster by the notable British cartoonist and illustrator Fougasse (Cyril Kenneth Bird; 1887-1965), one of the posters from the popular Careless Talk Costs Lives wartime propaganda series issued by the Ministry of Information - "But of course it mustn't go any further!" Great image of two men talking in their train carriage with the legs of Hitler and Goering peeking out from the overhead luggage rack above them. Cyril Kenneth Bird CBE (17 December 1887 – 11 June 1965), known by the pen name Fougasse, was a British cartoonist best known for his work in Punch magazine (of which he served as editor from 1949 to 1953) and his World War II warning propaganda posters. He also designed many posters for the London Underground. Bird was born in London on 17 December 1887, the son of Arthur Bird, a company director. He was educated at Cheltenham College and King's College London (B.Sc). While at King's College he attended evening art classes at the Regent Street Polytechnic and at the School of Photo-Engraving in Bolt Court. He was seriously injured at the Battle of Gallipoli during World War I and invalided out of the British Army. Bird first contributed to Punch in 1916, while convalescing, and also contributed to several other British newspapers and magazines, including the Graphic and Tatler. His pen name was based on the fougasse, a type of mine. As one of the best known cartoonists of the time, he was one of 170 authors who created doll-sized books exclusively for Queen Mary's Dolls' House; his illustrated verse tale, written on postage stamp-sized pages, was published as a regular-sized hardback in 2012 by the Royal Collection and Walker Books. In the course of the 1920s and 1930s, his drawings evolved from the traditionally representational to an innovative, spare, style that was both unique and popular, featuring in many advertising campaigns as well as in magazine editorial. He became art editor of Punch from 1937 to 1949, then editor until 1953. He was the only cartoonist ever to edit the magazine. During World War II, he worked unpaid for the Ministry of Information, designing humorous but effective propaganda posters including the famous "Careless Talk Costs Lives" series. For this work he was awarded the honour of Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1946. He illustrated and co-wrote several humorous books with W. D. H. McCullough. These included the very successful Aces Made Easy – or Pons asinorum in a nutshell, on the subject of contract bridge, in 1934, and You Have Been Warned – A Complete Guide to the Road, in 1935. In the mid 1950s, he taught at the Christian Science Sunday School in the Sloane Square church, which has since been converted into the Cadogan Hall concert hall. He died in London, aged 77. Since 2009 his cartoon of a butler carrying a tray has been used to illustrate the front page of British Airways' First Class menus, continuing an association with the airline which goes back to the 1930s when Fougasse penned advertising posters for BA's forerunner, Imperial Airways. Condition: Excellent condition.. Country of printing: UK, designer: Fougasse (Cyril Kenneth Bird, size (cm): 32x20.5, year of printing: 1940s.

Lot 202

Original vintage WWI propaganda poster showing published to celebrates the participation of troops from the French colonies and overseas territories during the first world war: Day for the African Army and the Colonial Troops (Text in French: Journée de l'armée d'Afrique et des troupes coloniales). Great image by Lucien Jonas showing French soldiers fighting on the front alongside black soldiers from Africa. More than 480,000 such troops were deployed by France in Europe over the course of the war, including 134,300 soldiers from West Africa, 172,800 from Algeria, 60,000 from Tunisia, 37,300 from Morocco, 34,400 from Madagascar, 2,100 from the Somali coast, and 44,000 from Indochina. Initially, most colonial troops were volunteers, but as the war dragged on and casualties mounted, the French authorities increasingly relied on conscription to secure Arab and West African soldiers. Most men in the colonies had no desire to fight for France, and forced recruitment provoked severe resistance. In West Africa, local chiefs provided potential recruits, most often young men from the lower social strata, to the French authorities. Many potential recruits escaped conscription by hiding in the bush or by fleeing to Liberia or to neighboring British or Portuguese colonies. In several countries, there were uprisings against French recruitment policies. The Troupes coloniales ("Colonial Troops") or Armée coloniale ("Colonial Army"), commonly called La Coloniale, were the military forces of the French colonial empire from 1900 until 1961. From 1822 to 1900 these troops were designated Troupes de marine ("Marine Troops" or just "Marines"), and in 1961 they readopted this name. They were recruited from mainland France or from the French settler and indigenous populations of the empire. This force played a substantial role in the conquest of the empire, in World War I, World War II, the First Indochina War and the Algerian War. Condition: Poor condition, folds, tears, paper losses, staining, ink stamp.. Country of printing: France, designer: Lucien Jonas , size (cm): 120x80, year of printing: 1917.

Lot 262

Original vintage World War Two poster by the notable British cartoonist and illustrator, Fougasse (Cyril Kenneth Bird; 1887-1965). This is one of the posters from the popular Careless Talk Costs Lives wartime propaganda series issued by the Ministry of Information - "...strictly between these four walls!" Image of two men in armchairs holding newspapers with an image of Hitler's face in a portrait hanging behind them. Lot 35

Original vintage advertising poster for Coop children charity stamps. This poster was printed in 1965, the Dutch children's stamp blocks 1965 - 1970 are on a harmful list of issues drawn up by the Fédération Internationale de Philatélie because the surcharge of two of the five stamps was higher than half the postage value (which would unnecessarily incur collectors' costs). Fun image of a little blonde girl in dress standing behind a stall with stamp folders and holding a sheet of stamps in her hand. Children's stamps are stamps whose surcharge , the amount on top of the franking value , is used for projects that benefit the youth. Switzerland had the first children's stamp in 1912 , the proceeds of which went to Pro Juventute. In 1924, the Netherlands was the second country to start selling children's stamps. Children's postage stamps have been published every year since then, except during the war years 1942-1944. From 1936 the surcharge was mentioned on the stamps, initially in lower case under the stamp image, since 1949 in the stamp image. Every year a new series is released with a different theme. The sale is organized by Stichting Kinderpostzegels Nederland , which uses the proceeds to support charities for the benefit of the child. Condition: Good condition, staining, creasing.. Country of printing: Netherlands, designer: C. Velsen, size (cm): 41x29, year of printing: 1965.

Lot 310

A US One-Sheet movie poster for Sam Peckinpah’s ultra-violent western “The Wild Bunch” (1969). The genre would never be the same after this. Hugely influential in its depiction of bloody and graphic screen violence, which at the time made it controversial and equally admired as much as it was hated when screened. The advertising campaign that accompanied its release largely used the same imagery; the gang of nine all facing away from the camera appearing to be striding off into the sunset or battle with only the colour palette used being changed for different countries, with the US One-Sheet using a calm-before-the-storm blue tone. The poster carries a "DOMESTIC" stamp to the reverse indicating the poster was meant to be used in the USA. When Mike Nichols’ classic movie “The Graduate” was first released in 1968, there were two regular One-Sheets. To further complicate things, Embassy Releasing released the movie in the United States, and United Artists released it outside the United States. Both studios issued both styles of One-Sheet, so there are four different original release OneSheets. To further muddy the waters, right after the movie won an Academy Award, new posters were printed with “Academy Award® Winner” added to the area at top. The pre-award One-Sheets from Embassy, especially the line drawing style B, are the most desirable posters from this film.NSS #68/2627" x 41" (69 x 104 cm)Condition: GoodUnrestored, originally folded (as issued). Small areas of paperloss to the three crossfolds (the bottom crossfold also has a 1" fold split). Slight darkening to central vertical fold line in top half. One piece of tape to reverse and NSS stamp but no bleed through to front imagery. There are two snipes (a sign the poster was reused for later releases) to the bottom right corner. Still presents and displays to good effect with a bright white background.
