* DAMIEN HIRST (BRITISH b.1965), HEART unique acrylic on card, signed and stamped Damien Hirst verso, also with embossed 'Hirst' stamp 53cm x 53cm Mounted, framed and under glass Notes: This large spin painting was created at Damien Hirst's retrospective 'Requiem' Exhibition at The Pinchuk Art Centre, Kiev in April 2009. Very few of Hirst's spin paintings are heart-shaped and, amongst these, signed works are extremely rare. Provenance: Vogtle Contemporary, Geneva, Switzerland.
COOPER GARY: (1901-1961) American Actor, Academy Award winner. A.L.S., with his initials G C, one page, 8vo, Paris, n.d. ('Monday', May 1953), to Miss. Smith, on the printed stationery of the Hotel Lancaster. Cooper informs his correspondent that he has just returned from Brussels and will go to Germany on Wednesday before returning to Paris. With a Received stamp to the upper margin and one file hole to the upper edge, neither of which affect the text or signature. A couple of very light, extremely minor creases and the upper left corner of the letter neatly mounted. About VG. £80-100
MANHATTAN MELODRAMA: An original copy of the screenplay for Three Men ('Manhattan Melodrama') by Arthur Caesar, 68 pages, 4to, Culver City, California, 8th September 1933. The printed script is bound by two metal clasps and has the original paper covers, the front cover bearing the original paper label of the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer script department neatly pasted above the typed title. With a couple of pencil annotations in an unidentified hand, a typed note stating 'Treatment by Frank Dolan & Arthur Caesar Sept. 8, 1933' and a stamp at the base stating INCOMPLETE. Scarce. Some light age wear, minor creasing and small tears to the paper covers, G. £200-300. Three Men was released with the title Manhattan Melodrama in 1934. The crime film starred Clark Gable, William Powell and Myrna Loy, and also provided Mickey Rooney with one of his earliest screen roles. Interestingly, it was also the film that John Dillinger watched in Chicago on 22nd July 1934 before being shot to death by Federal Agents when he left the cinema. Arthur Caesar (1892-1953) Romanian-born American Screenwriter. Caesar won an Academy Award for Best Story for Manhattan Melodrama.
MESMER FRANZ: (1734-1815) German Physician and Astronomer. He theorised on animal magnetism, technique later named hypnosis, today´s meaning of Mesmerism. Rare A.L.S., Mesmer, one page, 4to, Versailles, 29th June 1802, to citizen Aubry, in French. Mesmer refers to his new living city, Versailles, and asks his correspondent about his health and about his plans for next summer, stating `If you still intend to go ahead with your plan of going to Eaux de Bains, and if it is convenient to you to do so via Versailles, I could accompany you: I would like to make a trip to Alsace while you are at the Bains to look for a small property which I may acquire.´, further requesting a prompt response from Aubry. With the adressee´s name to the verso in Mesmer´s hand, and a blind embossed stamp to the left heading bearing "Bibliotheque Occulte du Cte d´Ourches". Left edge irregularly trimmed and paper loss to the upper edge, not affecting the text or signature. G. £1500-2000 Aubry was a Doctor in Medicine, pupil and friend of Mesmer who practised magnetism with him. Provenance: from the collection of Count of Ourches (1787-1867) Eminent Esoterist who spent most of his fortune in magnetic experiments and putting together a very large private library with thousands of occultism volumes.
STEPHENSON GEORGE: (1781-1848) English Civil & Mechanical Engineer who built the first public inter-city railway line in the world to use steam locomotives. A.L.S., Geo. Stephenson, two pages, 8vo, Upper George Street, 21st July 1843, to Mr. Abraham. Stephenson informs his correspondent that Mr. Leslie Jr. has been with him 'and brought an account of dilapidations and repairs said to be waiting in and about the Smiths Shop in Wells Mews' and further adding 'I told you that I had not got possession of the Shop that the Tennant to whom I let it had removed away but that I was negotiating for a reassignment of the underlease granted to him - and repossession - as soon as I have got it, I will commence repairs, until then my hands are tied'. With integral address leaf (some light overall dust staining) in Stephenson's hand and bearing a Penny Red postage stamp. Some light overall age wear, a small area of paper loss to the upper right corner and some professional repairs to strengthen the vertical central fold. About VG. £400-600
