An 18ct gold necklace by contemporary jeweller Paul Preston, composed of spectacle set discs of yellow or white gold, varying sizes and of rough textured finish, joined by short lengths of small circular links with a larger central link and suspending from the front the largest disc, to an 'S' hook clasp; Birmingham hallmarks 1976 and with maker's 'PP' stamp, four further discs with crown and 750 punches, and another with a double chevron in a cushion outline assumed to be an early signature; length 64cm, weight 16.76g Paul Preston was born in 1943, trained as an architect (double first from Oxford Poly, now Oxford Brooks), but soon abandoned that career; and while supporting himself by diving for crayfish and scrap from wrecks off the Cornish coast, became a self-taught craftsman jeweller. He lived with his family in a former nudist camp in Pembrokeshire, and with the alter ego of the Red Mole, created jewellery in precious metals, sometimes alloys of his own invention, and gemstones: one-off, detailed and sometimes emotive pieces inspired by the natural world, the art of Breon O'Casey and craftsmanship of Bernard Leech. He stopped work in 1997 for some years, suffering from clinical depression, but has taken up his unique creative baton again in the last few years; he has exhibited at galleries at home and abroad and his jewellery is in the permanent collection of the V&A (a gold and ruby brooch dated 2007 depicting 'A Charm of Goldfinches'), and his work is currently available in a number of commercial art galleries from Edinburgh to St Ives in Cornwall, including Primavera in Cambridge.
John William Buxton Knight (British, 1843-1908) Hop pickers, Kent one signed lower left "John Buxton Knight" and the other signed lower left "John Buxton Knight '79" oi on canvas (a pair) 37 x 75cm (14 x 29in) Other Notes: John Buxton Knight was born in Sevenokas, Kent. He died at Dover on 2 January 1908. His work is in the Tate. Painting with buildings in the background is executed in oil on a coarse weave canvas support which is unlined. The other painting is also unlined and on a finer weave cabasv with an artist's supplier stamp for P. Shea. The paint layers on both wirks are thickly applied and appear to be in a good condition. The varnish layers are thick and have yellowed. The frames are in a good condition.
English School (19th Century) A small girl with a collie in a landscape signed lower left with monogram "CHBL '94" oil on canvas 44 x 38cm (17 x 15in) Other Notes: An attribution has been suggested to Charles Blair Leighton. One old repaired tear. Oil on canvas which is unlined with artist's suppliers stamp on the reverse of the canvas for Winsor and Newton. There is patch at the lower left corner (seen from the reverse) securing an old damage which has been filled and retouched from the front. Paint layer in good condition overall. Varnish is even and glossy. Frame in good condition.
Thomas Smythe (British, 1825-1907) Coastal scene with travellers by a farmstead signed lower left "T Smythe" oil on canvas 30 x 44cm (12 x 17in) Quite dirty. John Lindsay Lucas (British, 1807-1874) Portrait of Richard Gunnell (c.1807-1872), husband of Frances Gunnell (nee Alington) signed lower right "J Lucas 1851" oil on canvas, unlined, in a carved and gilded Florentine frame 75 x 59cm (29 x 23in) Other Notes: Richard Gunnell married Frances Alington in 1841. He died at the Grand Hotel, Catania, Italy, in 1872. It is possible that the following seven lots were acquired by the Gunnells during their honeymoon tour of the Continent. On a Roberson canvas in a Florentine frame. Oil on canvas which is unlined with a supplier's stamp for Charles Roberson on the reverse. The canvas tension is good and the painting is in plane. The paint layer has drying cracks in the sitter's face but is stable overall. The varnish is old, degraded and yellow. The surface is matte and very dusty. The frame is in a good condition.
James John Hill, RBA (British, 1811-1882) Portrait of a Spanish girl in a lace mantilla signed "J J Hill" lower right oil on canvas 75 x 63cm (29 x 25in) James John Hill was born in Birmingham in 1811 and studied at the Drawing School of J V Barber, a member of the Barber family of artists of Birmingham. Hill moved to London where he built up a reputation as a portrait painter, showing principally at the Royal Society of British Artists and at the Royal Academy between 1845 and 1868. He died at Highgate in 1882. Oil on canvas which is unlined with a Winsor and Newton supplier's stamp on the reverse. Canvas tension is slightly slack. A few localised areas of paint loss although the paint layer is stable overall. The varnish is very dull and uneven. Frame is dusty but in a good condition.
Frederick Albert Clark (British, fl. 1906-1909) A dark bay trotting pony and cart in a landscape signed lower right "Frederick Albert Clark 1911" oil on canvas 49 x 60cm (19 x 23in) Old stretcher bar marks can be seen from the front. Yellowed varnish. Rub marks to the sky. Oil on canvas, unlined with a Winsor and Newton supplier's stamp on the reverse. There are a few small losses to the paint layer but overall it appears stable. Circle of Richard Buckner (British, 1812–1883) Portrait of Frances Alington (1789-1866), later Mrs Gunnell, daughter of the Reverend William Alington (1761-1849), seated, half length oil on canvas, unlined, Florentine carved and giltwood frame 89 x 69cm (35 x 27in) Provenance: By descent within the family of the sitter at Little Barford Manor, Bedfordshire Other Notes: The sitter married in 1841 Richard Gunnell (see following lot 493). As was traditional at the time, it is probable that the couple spent their honeymoon on the Continent and the carved Florentine frames around both portraits would seem to confirm this. The couple died childless. Continental stretcher and an English canvas. Dirty and with a rub mark on the left hand side. Oil on canvas which is unlined with the artist's supplier stamp for T Brown on the reverse. The canvas tension is slightly slack but it is in plane. There is localised flaking and paint loss around the edges of the painting. Drying cracks are present in the lighter paint passages which are distracting but stable. There is some uneven surface texture in the background due to the artist's choice of materials and technique. The painting is compromised by a degraded varnish which is matte, uneven and no longer adequately saturating the paint surface. There is a thick layer of surface dirt and dust. The frame is in a good condition.
