A FRENCH 18TH CENTURY LOUIS QUINZE ORMOLU MOUNTED TULIPWOOD, KINGWOOD AND SATINE PARQUETRY SECRÉTAIRE ABATTANT BY CHARLES CHEVALLIER MAÎTRE CWC 1732, the shaped Breche d'Alep marble top above a fall front, opening to reveal a gilt tooled leather writing surface, and an interior fitted with three compartments and six drawers including one with an inkwell, above a central drawer fitted with sliding surfaces hiding compartments and a central adjustable lectern, a pair of doors opening to a single shelf on cabriole feet with foliate cast sabots. Stamped under the marble, Chevallier and JME. 133.5cm high; 114cm wide; 41cm deep (52.5 high; 44.5 wide; 16 deep)Charles Chevallier (1703-1771) established his workshop on Rue du Bac, Paris, and his production consists essentially of fine marquetry furniture, a secrétaire bearing his stamp can be seen in the collection of the Musée Carnavalet in Paris. The Wonders of the Peake by Charles Cotton 1683 Book - written in heroic couplets, Cotton's was one of the first landscape poems of a movement which only became significant under Queen Anne. His wonders are Pool's Hole (Page 5), St Anne's Well Buxton (page 20), Tydeswell (page 24), Elden-Hole (page 30), Mamtor (page 41), Peake's-Arse (page 47), and Chatsworth (page 72). The dedicatee is Elizabeth, Duchess of Devonshire. He was a Derbyshire man who loved the Peak District This poem by Cotton encouraged travellers seeking sensational experiences to travel to Derbyshire. In telling of The Wonders of the Peak this was effectively publishing the Peak Districts first-ever travel guide. Of Chatsworth he wrote "There stands a stately and stupendous pile". In old black leather binding, size 4½" × 7". Title page has some stain from old library stamp.
Hermann Goering (1893-1946) - Personal Wallet Given to Goering's Defence Lawyer at the International War Crimes Tribunal, Nuremberg - the red morocco leather wallet with gold Vienna maker's mark to the interior, was given to Dr. Otto Stahmer and contains Stahmer's International Military Tribunal Pass No.245 with signature and photograph. A 13x9cm photograph of Goering, his wife and child which all three have pen signed to the faces with a hand written inscription to the reverse reading 'To my Defence Council Dr. Stahmer with sincere and heartfelt appreciation. Hermann Goering. Nuremberg Sept 1946'. Complete with US censor stamp. Also containing small note with pencil written note in Goering's hand translated to 'We have to hurry with our application otherwise Funk will be finished and the application will be made difficult'. Walter Funk was the president of Reichsbank and was sentenced to life in prison at Nuremberg. Dr. Otto Stahmer was head of the Naval Legal Department in Kiel and picked by Goering to ac as his Defence Lawyer at the International War Crimes Trial. Item comes complete with photocopied photographs taken from the Imperial War Museum of the Courtroom at Nuremberg identifying Dr. Otto Stahmer sitting in front with Goering behind him. This item previously belonged to Dr. Otto Stahmer's son.
