* Abraham (George Perry, 1844-1923). A group of 138 vintage platinum prints, early 20th c., including approx. eighty-eight photographs of the mountains of the Isle of Skye and fifty photographs of North Wales, of these approximately 100 with embossed stamp or verso wet stamp credit ‘G.P. Abraham, Photo, Keswick, Copyright’, the majority numbered in the negative and all with old pencil captions to versos, a minority of images showing climbers (men and women) or signs of habitation, all approx. 16 x 20cm or the reverse, a few minor spots but generally VG . George Perry Abraham established a successful photographic business in Keswick during the late nineteenth century, and was joined by his sons George Dixon and Ashley Perry Abraham. The trio often climbed together and produced the first photographs of rock climbers in action. They published ‘Rock Climbing in North Wales’ in 1906 and ‘Rock Climbing in Skye’ in 1908. ‘If the books were powerfully influential, the Abraham photographs were even more so. They were unrivalled for their time, and can still stand comparison with the best black and white work of later climber photographs’ (A. Hankinson, Camera on the Crag, London, 1975, p. 23). (138)

Medina’s navigational treatise was first published in Spanish in Seville in 1545, and it was soon translated into English, French and German as well as Italian. Palau 159680. (1).

Aeronautics - [Pocock, George]. The Aeropleustic Art or Navigation in the Air, by the Use of Kites, or Buoyant Sails, 1st ed., [London: W. Wilson? for the author, c.1834], eng. title by A. Adlard with aquatint vignette by P. Roberts, and three aquatint plates (2 by Roberts, one after T. Butterworth & the other after S. Colman, on paper watermarked 1834), spotting, offsetting and some dampstaining, 16 leaves with ink stain to blank fore-edge margins and with consequent embrittlement & fraying, late 19th dark blue qtr. sheep, with orig. printed paper label to upper board, worn at head & foot of spine & joints rubbed, board edges worn, boards spotted, slim 4to. Upper pastedown with armorial bookplate of Francis Frederick Fox (1844-1927), civil engineer and ink stamp of Terence Bryant Bristol Collection, dated 1980. Recognising the force of wind power, Pocock provides a history of the kite as a scientific invention, and examines its potential adaptations as a kind of ascending parachute for mariners before describing the famous Charvolant, a kite-powered carriage capable of speeds of twenty miles per hour. The vignette illustration to the title shows a rescue by means of a kite, and the plates illustrate a kite-powered ‘Boat Race’, the ‘Patent Kite and Charvolant’ and ‘Charvolants travelling in various directions in the same wind’. The author’s daughter, Martha, survived a test flight in one of Pocock’s contraptions, to later become W.G. Grace’s mother. The work attracted serious attention, as well as satire, and a second edition appeared in 1851. Not in Abbey or Tooley. (1).

Kropotkin (Petr Alekseevich, Prince, 1842-1921). Autograph letter signed ‘P. Kropotkin’, 17 Roxborough Road, Harrow-on-the-Hill, 30 May 1887, to Madame, in English, thanking her for the sympathy and letter, noting that his wife is recovering well, ‘and the baby recovers by and by from the rough treatment that, poor creature, it was submitted to on its appearance in the world. I say that we find our little miss quite delightful, with her big eyes, long lids and happy expression when she is by her mother’, 4 pp., a little spotting and soiling, 8vo, together with nine other non-British royalty interest and related, including a letter signed by the Sultan of Zanzibar directing for assistance to Lieutenant C.S. An autograph letter signed from the English polymath Robert Leslie Ellis (1817-1869), Bath, 29th January [1841], to Archibald Smith, hoping for his vote when Ellis is to be ballotted for the Oxford & Cambridge Club, 2 pp. plus integral blank, 8vo, with original envelope, an unperforated Penny Black stamp (letters NK), various postmarks including red one on stamp, together with an early pre-paid printed English postcard, stamped Wells, 11th September 1876, addressed to J. Smith, the message on the reverse from the historian Edward Augustus Freeman (1823-1892), plus a first UK Aerial Post postcard addressed to Sir Henry Babington Smith, stamped and franked 9th September 1911, the message on the reverse unsigned (3).
