Antoine-Victor-Edmond-Madeleine Joinville, French 1801-1849- 5 Neapolitan drawings: The Grotto of Posillipo; View of Naples; Castellamare; Vico; View of Pozzuoli; each pencil on paper, the first with the artist’s studio stamp ‘Vente Joinville’ and dated ‘26 April 1823’ (lower right), 25.7 x 20.7 cm., the second dated ‘le 6 Novembre 1823’ and inscribed ‘1.2.B’ (lower edge), 23.6 x 39.4 cm., the third dated ‘Nobre 1823’ (lower right), 20.6 x 30 cm., the fourth with the artist’s studio stamp ‘Vente Joinville’ (upper left), 20.5 x 29.1 cm., the fifth with the artist’s studio stamp ‘Vente Joinville’ (upper left), 22.4 x 28.9 cm., five (5). Note: Joinville was principally celebrated as a landscape painter, and is often identified as part of the second generation of classical landscape painters who were active in Italy in the 19th century, alongside figures including Jean-Baptiste-Camile Corot (1796-1875) and Edouard Bertin (1797-1871). He first visited Italy in 1823, an experience which clearly had a strong influence on him, inspiring him to produce a number of views of the country and leading him to often return there over the following years. The Duchess of Berry (1798-1870) commissioned him to paint numerous Sicilian views and he exhibited many of his Italian views at the Parisian Salon between 1831 and 1848.Please refer to department for condition report

Lot 243

Richard Geiger, Austrian 1870-1945- Portrait of a lady holding a ribbon; oil on canvas, signed 'GEIGER.R.' (lower right), bears indistinct stamp to the reverse of the canvas, 85.5 x 67 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Geiger’s oeuvre is defined by idealised portrayals of female figures. Though he often experimented with different approaches to the subject, depicting his sitters in a range of historical and allegorical settings, his preoccupation with the female figure endures throughout his output. His use of loose and flowing brushstrokes reinforce the seductive confidence which his models exude, with the bold gaze of the sitter in the present work directly engaging the viewer, establishing a sense of intimacy which is heightened by the informality of the sitter’s pose and dress. Please refer to department for condition report

Lot 44

Attributed to Nicolaas Rijnenburg, Dutch 1716-c.1802- A pantry scene with a maid and boy weighing hazelnuts; oil on panel, dated 'Fec 1756.' (in the barrel lower right), with collector's stamp on the reverse, bears old typed label 'MIERIS -1735.' on the reverse, 33.4 x 26.6 cm. Provenance: Anon. sale, Christie's, New York, 30 January 2014, lot 248 (as by Frans van der Myn 1719-1783).; Anon. sale, Bonhams, London, 23 February 2016, lot 63 (£2,625). Note: The present work is listed on the RKD website (Netherlands Institute for Art History) under no.116839 and was attributed to Nicolaas Rijnenburg by Dr Fred Meijer. Working in Leiden in the 18th century, and clearly an artist of considerable merit, Rijnenburg was undoubtedly influenced by Frans van Mieris the Younger (1689-1763), and very much continued the tradition of the Leiden Fijnschilders. In this charming interior scene, the soft modelling of the figures and the attention to the different materials and textures attest to the painter's own artistic skills. The domestic setting gives the spectator an enjoyable insight into a typical Dutch family home with a charming detail present in the plate of 'olibollen', which are still eaten in the Netherlands today at New Year's Eve celebrations. In 1959 the CBD created a national football championship – the Taça Brasil – competed for by state champions. This was deemed necessary to appoint a Brazilian representative in 1960 to the first edition of the Copa Libertadores, the South American equivalent of the European Cup/Champions League. The Taça Brasil ran until 1968 before evolving through various formats until settling as today’s Campeonato Brasileiro Série A from 1989. At state level Santos FC competed in the Campeonato Paulista, the top-flight League in the state of São Paulo. As Paulista or reigning Copa Libertadores champions, they qualified for and won a remarkable five successive Taça Brasil titles between 1961 and 1965. FIFA had previously honored me as the Player of the Century, but this was the 2004 award, my last FIFA honor, acknowledging everything that I had done for this sport. It’s a huge responsibility." The medal was due to be presented to Pelé at a ceremony during the 54th FIFA Ordinary Congress in Paris that had been timed to coincided with FIFA’s Centenary 20-21 May 2004, but Pelé was recovering from an eye operation and could not attend. The presentation finally took place on 23rd September 2004 at the FIFA headquarters with Pelé being honoured for his outstanding lifetime contributions to the sport and in FIFA's consideration of his status as the greatest player in football history. In addition to this ribboned medal, FIFA also presented Pele with a medallion which is offered as the next lot. Awarded at the same event, the only other recipient of the FIFA Centennial Order of Merit medal was Franz Beckenbauer for his unique achievement of both captaining and managing a World Cup winning team - West Germany in 1974 and 1990.
