Chris Calle (American, B. 1961) "Angelfish" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 33c Angelfish, Hawkfish and Sea Anemone stamp issued June 24, 1999. Angelfish are very similar in appearance to butterflyfish, and at one time were classified in the same family. Both have a deep, compressed body, a small mouth with brushlike teeth, and a single, unnotched dorsal fin. They also display striking patterns of spectacular color. An inhabitant of the rich coral growth of clear lagoon and seaward reefs, the Flame Angelfish is identified by its flame-orange body with contrasting stripes and brilliant blue-tipped dorsal and anal fins. Easily startled, it prefers to stay near a sheltered area. A regular export from Majuro, the Flame Angelfish thrives in captivity as an aquarium fish, if given a sunlit tank with ample algal growth. Image Size: 7.75 x 6 in. Overall Size: 13 x 11.5 in. Unframed. (B16431)

Lot 253

Chris Calle (American, B. 1961) "David Farragut" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the 32 David Farragut Classic Collection Series stamp issued June 29, 1995. Son of a Spanish sea captain, adopted at age eight by a U.S. naval officer, battling the British aboard the frigate Essex at age 12, David Glasgow Farragut would later fight pirates in the West Indies and take part in the war with Mexico. A resident of Norfolk, Virginia, Farragut moved his family north the same day Virginia seceded from the Union. With the outbreak of the Civil War, Union strategy was to isolate the Confederacy by blockade and by seizing the Mississippi River. Farragut was selected to head the Southern expedition to capture New Orleans by naval attack. In April of 1862, after a furious battle against Forts Jackson and St. Philip on the Mississippi, New Orleans surrendered. Farragut became the first man in the U.S. Navy to be promoted to rear admiral. He soon won the nickname of "Old Salamander" by running his ships repeatedly under heavy gunfire. On August 5, 1864, during the Battle of Mobile Bay, Farragut set out to capture the Confederate ironclad Tennessee with four ironclad monitors and 14 wooden ships. When one Union ship was sunk by a submerged torpedo, the others stopped in alarm. A monumental pile-up might have resulted, but Farragut, in the Hartford, made one of his famous quick decisions. "Damn the torpedoes," he shouted, "Full speed ahead!" The Hartford then maneuvered through the minefield without incident. After a violent engagement, the Tennessee was forced to surrender. Congress later created the ranks of vice admiral, and then admiral, for Farragut. Image Size: 14.5 x 12 in. Overall Size: 23 x 18 in. Unframed. (B15212)

Chris Calle (American, B. 1961) "Home on the Range - Portrait of a Cowboy" Signed lower right. Original watercolor painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover of the U.S. 29c Home on the Range stamp issued October 18, 1994. The character of the West was molded by a wide variety of rugged individualists: trappers, traders, prospectors and enterprisers. But the men and women who gave it permanency were the first settlers. Buying cattle from the Mexicans in Texas, these hardy souls drove the herds northward across the Great Plains to the Rocky Mountains. They built ranches, put down roots and made the land productive. For the most part, they were tough, singleminded business people on horseback who knew how to survive in an isolated, inhospitable region that offered only wild prairie grass and an occasional free flowing stream. They learned how to cope with solitude, failure and backbreaking toil, while battling the hazards of nature and each other. Some survived and some didn't. But many of those who did -- men like Texans Charles Goodnight and Richard King, Wyoming's Francis Warren, New Mexico's John Chisum and Montana's Conrad Kohrs -- became legendary and accumulated enormous power and wealth. The years between 1866 and 1886 were the glory days of Western ranching, when more than 10 million cattle and one million sheep were shipped to markets in the East. Land was cheap -- sometimes even free for the taking. Life was often cheap, too, as cattle rustlers and horse thieves were shot on sight or hanged without a trial. By the 1870s, barbed wire was closing in the open range and newcomers were plowing up the earth. Some cattlemen overextended, overgrazed and overstocked. Image Size: 19.25 x 14.5 in. Overall Size: 23 x 20 in. Unframed. (B14837)

Chris Calle (American, B. 1961) "WWII - America's First Peacetime Draft 1940" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media watercolor painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally used on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 29c America's First Peacetime Draft stamp issued September 3, 1991. One of the most controversial bits of legislation to ever enter the hallowed halls of Congress was the Selective Training and Service Act of 1940. Only after weeks of intense and heated debate did it pass in September of that year to authorize the first peacetime draft in the history of the nation. The new law required men between the ages of twenty-one and thirty-five to register at local draft boards across the country on October 16 -- over sixteen million men registered. Two weeks later, U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt watched as Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson plucked the first number in the draft from a bowl filled with capsules numbered 1 to 8,994. The number was one hundred fifty-eight; 6,175 men across the nation held that honor. Those who were deemed qualified for service were then required to report for duty. Local draft boards classified individuals in more than a dozen different categories. Some were 1-A, meaning "available for military service;" others were classified as 4-F which were rejected as "physically, mentally or morally unfit for service." In all, some sixteen million Americans served their country during the war. Some were volunteers, but the vast majority were drafted under the terms of that controversial act of 1940. Image Size: 16.5 x 12 in. Overall Size: 23.25 x 20 in. Unframed. (B13103)

Chris Calle (American, B. 1961) "America - View of Grand Canyon" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood Maximum Card for the U.S. 25c Grand Canyon Panorama stamp issued October 12, 1990. The American West is a land of canyons, a country sliced, chopped and incised with deep, spectacular gorges. Many of these have achieved fame for their beauty: the Royal Gorge of the Arkansas, the gorges of the Snake and the Columbia, the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. But no canyon is so famous, so singular in its immensity, or so intricate as the Grand Canyon of the Colorado River. The cutting, mighty Colorado has exposed the layers of time like an open book; North America's most spectacular canyon is also the continent's greatest geologic wonder. The inner gorge of the canyon dates from four billion years ago, with layer upon layer of history rising from the depths. Geologists feel that some of the volcanic rock and ash at the very rim of the canyon may be as little as one thousand years old -- a veritable babe in the sense of geologic time. It was into this great abyss that the first European, Garcia Lopez de Cardenas, gazed in awe in 1540. A member of Francisco Coronado's expedition in search of the Seven Golden Cities of Cibola, Cardenas made a side foray to the canyon in what is now Arizona. Millions since have experienced the wonders of the Grand Canyon, made a National Park in 1919. Because of this status, the canyon is much today as it was hundreds of years ago and this stamp, part of the America series, depicts its unchanged grandeur. The Colorado still cuts slowly down through the skin of the earth and eagles still soar high in the air over this great canyon. Image Size: 12 x 13 in. Overall Size: 15.5 x 23.25 in. Unframed. Chris Calle (American, B. 1961) "Yellow-Fin Tuna" Signed lower right. Original watercolor on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Federated States of Micronesia Yellow-Fin Tuna stamp issued August 4, 1995. Chris Calle's painting of the Yellow-fin Tuna is one of a set of four of the beautiful native fish of Micronesia. For centuries, Micronesians have thrived on a variety of food fish harvested from the waters surrounding their home islands. Today, commerical fishing companies have also tapped into the region's abundance of aquatic life. One of the most popular fish caught by such operations is the Skipjack Tuna. Particularly prevalent in the Pacific, these creatures are known to grow very rapidly. However, their life expectancy is only about four years. The Yellow-fin, another variety of tuna, has a reputation as one of the most tenacious game fish. Once it takes the bait, this fish fights the angler every step of the way. The Cave Grouper, on the other hand, is relatively secretive. It inhabits caves and crevices such as those found in Micronesia's steep outer reef slopes. Known to be a loner, the Cave Grouper typically travels singly or sometimes in small groups. A more gregarious resident of Pacific waters is the Bluelined Snapper. This fish occurs in large gatherings, particularly around prominent coral formations, isolated reefs and wrecks. Because this snapper feeds at night, it is among the most popular catches of sportsmen who fish during the evening hours. Image Size: 13 x 15.25 in. Overall Size: 14.5 x 22 in. Unframed. (B15148)

David K. Stone (American, 1922 - 2001) "USS Reuben James Sunk" Original Oil painting on Masonite. Signed lower right. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 30c USS Reuben James stamp issued October 31, 1991. On October 23, 1941, the USS Reuben James departed from Newfoundland to join five other American destroyers serving as convoy escorts for British merchant vessels. In the early morning hours of October 31, a surfaced German U-boat spotted the convoy and transmitted the news of its find to other subs in the area. Ordered to locate the source of the transmissions, the Reuben James increased speed and swerved to port -- just as the U-562 fired two torpedoes. One sped harmlessly aside; the other caught the venerable destroyer below the bridge, splitting the ship in half and igniting the forward magazine. The vessel sank within five minutes, and one hundred fifteen men -- two-thirds of its crew -- perished. The USS Reuben James thus became the first American warship lost in the Battle of the Atlantic. Image Size: 27 x 19.5 in. Overall Size: 27 x 24 in. Unframed. (B13152 / B13153)

J. Craig Thorpe (American, B. 1948) "Italian 691 Passenger" Signed lower right. Original Oil on Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands First Day Cover for the 55c Italian 4-6-2 stamp issued August 23, 1996. From 1928 to 1933, the Italian State Railway or Ferrovie dello Stato (FS) constructed the Group 691s, the largest Italian passenger locomotives ever built Group 691s were also among the last Italian steam engines constructed, since none were built for domestic use after the 1930s. Group 691 boilers were interchangeable with those of Group 746 freight engines and the sandbox was located around the steam dome -- a common feature of Italian locomotives. Though powerful, a 19 ton axle-load limited the 691's range to a few main lines including Venice to Rome and Venice to Udine. Although Italy was among the first countries to use diesel and electric locomotives due in part to abundant hydro power and Italy's proximity to oil supplies -- steam locomotives continued to play an important role in that country well into the 1970s. Only 33 Group 691s were built and their longevity is a testimony to the simple and efficient design. Image Size: 10 x 13.25 in. Overall Size: 13.5 x 18 in. Unframed. (B15345)

Mel Crawford (Canadian, B. 1925) "Congressman Getting Mail" Original Oil painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 15c Letters Shape Opinions stamp issued February 25, 1980. The Congressman sits back in his chair, smiling as his secretary stacks more boxes of letters near his desk. From the general tone of the letters he has read so far, his stand was the right one to take. And, although many of his fellow Congressmen oppose the issue, he now has the full support of his constituency and can point to their letters as further proof that the reform bill is indeed a good one. He has felt strongly about this particular bill from the very beginning and, although he knew his stand could have been unwise politically, he courageously took his case to the people. In a press conference the week before, he had explained the new reform bill as best he could and asked for feedback from his home state. He also had expressed his own strong views on the subject, but stated he would change his vote if the people so commanded. Several days later, the letters came pouring in. The voters did not let him down. Some suggested changes, a few that might well be incorporated into the final bill, and some might be offered as compromises if objections got too strong. But he is more than pleased to see that most of the letters agreed with his stand and respected him for having taken it. Some letter writers even sent facts and figures that will certainly be useful in making his case even stronger, should the need arise. As he sits back in his chair again, he is gratified to know that the people are still behind him. Image Size: 14.25 x 11.75 in. Overall Size: 14.5 x 12 in. Unframed. (B06032)

Mel Crawford (Canadian, B. 1925) "Italy" Signed lower right. Original watercolor painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover of the U.N. 20c Italy Flags of the U.N. Series stamp issued September 21, 1984. For many years, the history of Italy was the history of western civilization. Centered in the capital, Rome, the Romans built an extensive empire which included much of Europe and the Mediterranean area. The Roman Catholic Church also began in Rome . . . and the administrative center of the Church and residence of the Pope -- Vatican City -- is located at the heart of the ancient city of Rome. For more than two thousand years, Italy has produced leaders in architecture, painting, sculpture and other fine arts. Great Italian artists include Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and Raphael. The Renaissance of the arts, literature and music began and reached its highest peak in Italy . . . and during that time the city of Venice became the economic center of the Mediterranean. Known at the height of its power as the "Queen of the Adriatic," this romantic city of canals and gondolas supported successful explorers like Marco Polo. Because of the country's rich history and interesting cities like Rome and Venice, the nation has become the tourist center of modern Europe. Visitors from around the world come to see the buried city of Pompeii, to relax on the warm sunny beaches of the Mediterranean or to ski in the towering Alps and Apennines of the northern part of the country. A nation rich in history and culture and a favorite vacation spot for all of Europe -- the beautiful nation of Italy continues to be an enchanting and delightful gem of the Mediterranean Sea. Ronald Maddox (British, B. 1930) "Ironbridge, Shropshire" Signed lower right. Original Watercolor painting on Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Great Britain 19p Ironbridge, Shropshire stamp issued July 4, 1989. The world's first bridge made of iron stands in Shropshire. Image Size: 12.25 x 14 in. Overall Size: 19.5 x 21 in. Unframed. (B12089)

Ronald Maddox (British, B. 1930) "Caernarfon Castle" Signed lower left. Original Watercolor painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Great Britain 11p Caernarfon Castle stamp issued March 1, 1978. In the thirteenth century, Wales was an unbeatable thorn in England's side. The Welsh people, led by Llywelyn, remained independent by virtue of their spirited resistance against England. In 1282, however, Llywelyn was killed. And the hopes of the Welsh people died with him. Edward I quickly overran north Wales, and a series of mighty castles were built with the intention of dominating the Welsh people physically and psychologically. The Castle at Caernarfon -- the mightiest of these fortresses -- was begun in 1283. Eleven years later, much of the castle was destroyed in an uprising against the Crown. Repair work was immediately set in hand and by 1330 the castle stood much as it appears today. By 1485, Henry Tudor, of Welsh stock, ascended to the throne. The advent of the Tudor dynasty meant that Caernarfon and the other Edwardian castles were no longer needed. But through the centuries, to this day, Caernarfon has remained the supreme surviving example of Medieval architectural flourish, representing everything that modern man's imagination says a castle should be. Small wonder, then that Caernarfon has caught the imagination of writers and painters through the ages. Or that Dr. Johnson, when he saw Caernarfon in 1774, wrote in his diary that its stupendous magnitude and strength surpassed his ideas, for, as he said, he did not think there had been such buildings in the history of man. Tom McNeely (Canadian, B. 1935) "Bear Bryant" Signed lower right. Original Watercolor painting on Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover of the 32c Bear Bryant stamp issued July 25, 1997. Born in Arkansas in 1913, Paul Bryant earned the nickname "Bear" as a teenager when he was offered a dollar a minute to wrestle a live show-bear. After graduating from Alabama, where he played right end on the Crimson Tide team that defeated Stanford in the 1935 Rose Bowl, "Bear" Bryant worked as an assistant coach at Alabama and Vanderbilt. In 1941, with World War II underway, he joined the Navy. When the war ended, Bryant coached at Maryland for one year, moving to the University of Kentucky in 1946. His Kentucky record over the next eight years was 60-23-5 and included three bowl victories. In 1954, Bryant went to Texas A&M where he suffered his first and only losing season. But over the next three years the Aggies lost just five games and won the 1956 Southwest Conference championship. Bryant returned to Alabama in 1958 to coach a floundering football team that had just completed its fourth losing season. Looming larger than life in his trademark houndstooth check porkpie hat, "Bear" quickly turned the Crimson Tide around, becoming Coach of the Year in 1961. A tough disciplinarian, Bryant was not afraid to bench his recalcitrant star, Joe Namath, in 1964, even though it meant a close call in Alabama's Sugar Bowl victory over Mississippi. "Bear" Bryant retired only a month before his death in 1983. He had won or shared six national championships, been honored as Coach of the Year three times, won 15 of 29 bowl game appearances, and earned an overall won-lost record of 323-85, with 17 ties. Image Size: 21.5 x 15.75 in. Overall Size: 26.5 x 22.25 in. Unframed. (B15767)

J. Craig Thorpe (American, B. 1948) "British LNER "Mallard" 4-6-2" Signed lower right. Original Oil on Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands First Day Cover for the 55c British Liner "Mallard" 4-6-2 stamp issued August 23, 1996. Only 34 British A4s were built, from 1935-1938, by Doncaster Works for the London and North Eastern Railway. One of these, the Mallard, achieved the distinction of attaining the fastest authenticated speed in the world by a steam locomotive. In a special test run, Number 4468 earned ever-lasting fame on July 3,1938 when it reached a speed of 126 mph. Designed by Sir Nigel Gresley, the Mallard's streamlined shell gave it a unique appearance. Streamlining a new concept in locomotive design and was construction after independent wind-tunnel tests indicated that a savings of 97 horsepower at 80 mph and 138 horsepower at 90 mph could be obtained. The front of the Mallard was designed in the shape of a horizontal wedge, forcing air up and over the engine rather than out the sides like a conventional locomotive. The Mallard has been preserved at the National Railway Museum in York, England. Image Size: 10 x 13.25 in. Overall Size: 13.5 x 18 in. Unframed. (B15328)

J. Craig Thorpe (American, B. 1948) "Spanish Renfe 2-4-2 Express Messenger" Signed lower left. Original Oil on Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands First Day Cover for the 55c Spanish Renfe 4-8-4 stamp issued August 23, 1996. Only 10 Class 242s were built for Spain's Rede Nacional de los Ferrocarriles Espanoles (RENFE). Constructed by La Maquinista Terrestre y Maritima of Barcelona in 1955 to 1956, they were finished in resplendent green -- the only RENFE locomotives to wear this color. Class 242s were used on express passenger trains between Medina and Avila and on non-electrified portions of the run from Madrid to Irun at the French border. They burned oil portions rather than coal and were wide-gauge engines -- the Spanish gauge being 5 feet 6 in instead of the more customary 4 feet 8 1/2 in. Rolling on 75-inch spoked driving wheels, 242s exceeded 200 tons and were intended for climbing hills. They could run at speeds of 84 mph while carrying loads of 480 tons. Class 242s were among the last steam locomotives built in Western Europe and were the last European express locomotive class built. Image Size: 10 x 13.25 in. Overall Size: 13.75 x 18 in. Unframed. (B15329)

J. Craig Thorpe (American, B. 1948) "German DB Class 01" Signed lower left. Original Oil on Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands First Day Cover for the 55c stamp issued August 23, 1996. The German DB Class 01 steam passenger express locomotive was constructed by AEG and Borsig of Berlin between 1925 and 1937. Designed by Richard Wagner, 01s emphasized ease of maintenance, durability and a minimal level of stress to both locomotive and track. The Class 01s had a single smokestack, since detachable smokestack extensions and low power requirements dispensed with the need for double smokestacks. Round-topped copper fireboxes were standard and the engines had bar frames rather than plate. Many 01s were built in the 1950s with new and larger welded boilers. In the 1950s, Class 01s were commonly running 150,000 miles annually. Many converted the 1970s. Class 01s were Wagner's best-known design in the interwar period and were considered the epitome of the successful passenger locomotive. Image Size: 10 x 13.25 in. Overall Size: 13.5 x 18 in. Unframed. (B15330)

J. Craig Thorpe (American, B. 1948) "British "Evening Star"" Signed lower left. Original Oil on Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands First Day Cover for the 55c British Railways 2-10-0 stamp issued August 23, 1996. In 1948 Great Britain's four large railways were nationalized to form a single, government-owned network called British Railways. BR then implemented a series of standardized designs for steam locomotives. The heavy freight design was the Class 9. Two hundred and fifty-one were built from 1954 to 1960. Primarily intended to transport heavy goods, Class 9s were sometimes used for fast passenger transportation at speeds up to 90 mph. Probably the most famous of the Class 9s, the Evening Star was the last steam locomotive built in Britain. The Evening Star, recently restored to operating condition to pull excursion trains, is now the pride of the National Railway Museum in York, England. Although rugged and versatile, the Evening Star appropriately conveyed the impending twilight for the era of steam locomotives. Image Size: 10 x 13.25 in. Overall Size: 13.5 x 17.75 in. Unframed.
